Fly Fish Food Jimmy's / 2009 / May (Page 3)

Stillwaters 05-23-09

We have received a couple of good reports from Twin Lakes. The blugills and crappie have moved into the willows.  Twin Lakes should be good fishing through the entire month of June due to the good water year. Use a small beadhead fly like a blugill candy or beadhead damsel on a floating line. If we get a little cold spell and the fish move to deeper water in the mornings switch to sinking line until the water warms later in the day. For crappie try a Size 6 olive/chartruese clouse minnow. It can work good for bass too.

In the last couple of days the big stonefly nymphs have crawled out of the river from Ashton dam down to the Chester area. The dry fly fishing should start now but it might take a day or two for the fish to get on the big dries. The hatch will move upstream now before reaching box canyon in a week or so. We are going fishing for a couple of days so we’ll have some good information on Tuesday.

North shore of Hebgen Lake is producing for those presenting streamer and leech patterns just off shorelines. The Madison River from Hebgen Dam to Cabin Creek is fishing well for those presenting big stonefly nymphs. Quake Lake is coloring up becuase of run-off from Cabin and other creeks.

Most of these will be destinations for week-enders on the “unofficial opening of summer”.  Daniels and Hawkins reservoirs remain the best fishing with Chesterfield Reservoir improving.  Use patterns that we have recently recommended for all of these. Same for Springfield Reservoir.  We have a few reports on Twenty-four Mile Reservoir now. Leech and damselfly nymph patterns are working there.

Small Streams 5-21-09

Expect many of these to be crowded this weekend, especially those with easy access. This includes Birch Creek, Warm River and Buffalo River.  Many small streams will remain high with run-off.  Henry’s Lake Outlet could be a good bet, depending numbers of surplus cutthroat there and on flow remaining where it is now.  If you try it, use streamers and small wooly bugger patterns.

Big stonefly nymphs are beginning to move on the lower river.   We have reports from folks seeing a few nymphs here and there from Warm River to top of Chester backwaters.  That bodes well for this weekend if one enjoys pithcing big stonefly nymphs.  Use sink tip lines, and try your favorite giant stonefly nymph pattern. Don’t forget that caddis life cycle patterns could also be effective, especially later in the day.  Although likely that it will be crowded, don’t overlook Box Canyon.  Both caddis life cycle and big stonefly nymphs could be effective here.

Look for fish to be cruising shorelines looking for food this weekend.  Water out in the lake is cold to the point of being less hospitable and hosting less food, so fishing around shorelines will be most productive. That means the most popular access points are likely to be crowded.  Bring your favorite early season patterns particularly leech and wooly bugger patterns.  Use intermediate lines because of fish cruising the shallows.

Fish Clark Canyon Reservoir deep with midge patterns, and the result will be some big browns and ‘bows.  Streamers and wooly bugger types are less effective there for now. The Beaverhead fished very well opening weekend, but flow out of Clark Canyon has been increased.  So fishing will slow for a few days, then return with streamers and leech patterns.  The upper Madison River fished well opening weekend.  Rubberlegs with a serendipity dropper was the taking combination.  San Juan worms always work here this time of the season.  Fish the Hebgen Lake shorelines with leech, wooly bugger and streamer patterns for the best action.
