Today at Jimmy’s 3-15

Comments Welcome

After some consideration we have decided to open up comments to you our faithful customers on the Today at Jimmy’s post. Today at Jimmy’s has really become a blog about the shop, designed to inform you of whats going on here at the shop on a daily basis. Obviously we don’t post something everyday but we try to post several times a week. We would like to get to the point where we could post everyday but honestly my creativity is limited and I do what I can.

This part is the rules and conduct we expect. Don’t really want too but we have to talk about it, cause there is always one.  The comment section is a place for you to post positive comments and hopefully start up some conversations. It is assumed, but I need to mention that inappropriate material, language, and disrespectful behavior is not allowed in the comment section. If you violate these requests we will delete your comments and hope you will learn your lesson. We want to provide a positive atmosphere for anyone to share there feelings, ideas, and successes. Basically if its not rated G or PG its not wanted here. Jimmy and I talked about not moderating the comments, basically because we don’t want to devote the time to it. However if it gets to that point we will. So lets all get along, be adults and use this new awesome feature on the website appropriately.

Fly Tying Classes

Now that I got all the rules and expectations out of the way let me give you a heads up about whats going on at the shop. I have a couple of spots left in my beginning tying class that starts this Wednesday. I am also teaching 2 special topics classes that are coming up in April.

April 1st. Killer Bead Heads 6:30pm

This class is going to cover the nymph cycle of insects found in our local streams. We will not only tie bead head nymphs but we will be disscussing ideas on fishing nymphs, fishing set ups, and why one would use different materials for different nymphs. As always there will be some of my philosophy on fishing and little tricks and tips to help make you a better fly tier.

April 22nd. Streamers 6:30pm

This class is going to cover Streamer Flies and fishing techniques. We will be learning articulated streamers, double hook streamers and some really good patterns that simply catch fish. Also I will be covering materials and why it is important to use one versus the other for certain types of patterns.

To find out more information on our fly tying classes go to the classes page on this website or just click here. Space is limited and they are filling up fast so call the shop and get on the list right now!

East Idaho Fly Tying Expo

Classes and workshops are now available to register for at the shop. We also have ticket packages, and banquet tickets. Fly Boxes are now available to pick up. Grab yours today and fill it up with your favorite patterns so the Expo can auction it off. This is a great way to share your flies with other locals in the area and give back to an organization that works very hard to help keep our fishing spots protected.

Fly Fishing Film Tour

We are selling the tickets to the Fly Fishing Film tour this year it is going to be shown Friday night April 16th. (This is the weekend of the Expo) We have been playing teaser videos in the shop so you guys could see what will be shown at the film tour. I understand that they are going to be giving away a fly rod, a guided trip on the South Fork with yours truly, (yup some poor soul gets to listen to me for a day on the river) and some other good swag like fly lines, leaders, and fly boxes.

Tickets are $12 and available right now!

You don’t want to miss this film tour it has some really great films being featured and some great fishing footage.

Photo Gallery

We are looking to update the photos on our Photo Gallery. We like photos that portray catch and release fishing. For example if you send us a photo of a big dead fish and the background is your house, don’t plan on that photo being posted. (Unless it’s a South Fork Rainbow.) Kidding aside we want some good quality photos of your adventures on the river and lakes that you fish! We will have a featured photo every month. Send us your photos and maybe you will be our next featured photo! All types of fly fishing photos is accepted, photos of flies, fish, friends fishing, etc. Send them to [email protected].

Main Stem Snake River 3-13-10

Throughout the river streamers are producing good action.  Flows are  below normal. Access is improving as snow and ice melt.   From Firth to American Falls Reservoir the river is almost free of ice & snow, so this part of the river might be the best to visit to try your favorite streamer patterns.   The main stem Snake River is open to fishing year round.

Small Streams 3-13-10

Winter fishing season ends on March 31st.  Between now and then some small streams to consider are Warm River around the campground, Fall River above Chester, and the Portneuf River above Lava Hot Springs.  Warm and Fall River still have shore ice and snow, but it is going quickly making access easier.  On all of these streams midges and an increasing BWO emergence currently will bring dry fly action.   Small bead head and rubber legs patterns should be in your fly box for wet fly fishing.

Big Lost River 3-13-10

Flow out of Mackay Dam remains at just over 100 cfs, snow is leaving the country, and BWOs are becoming active. Small bead head nymphs, BWO and midge life cycle patterns, and golden stone nymphs should be in your fly box.  Winter fishing season ends March 31st.   So with improving weather consider the Big Lost between town and the dam. Wading is easy, ‘bows and brookies are active, and only a few anglers will be present.   What more could you ask for?

Just a couple new items to talk about. Before I move to that subject, just in case you haven’t heard the fishing is really good right now. If you get a chance to get out, go catch some fish its good for the soul, and a good cure for that cabin fever.

We have received some pretty cool hair stacker’s from Montana Fly Co. Many of you have seen the the River Camo tying scissors and forceps. We now carry River camo hair stacker’s! They come in Rainbow, River Rock, and Brown trout. You can get these stacker’s in two different sizes, Small and Large.

River Camo Hair Stacker

We also have received a new tying tool from Dr. Slick called a dubbing tool. This tool has a half hitch tool on the end and on the tip has two different types of Velcro for picking out dubbing.

We also have some new metal tubes from Eumer Tube Fly Co. These are metal tubes that are great for tying streamers. They come in a package with cone heads and the tube included. All you need to do is attach the tube to your vise and tie your fly, add the cone head and your finished. If you have questions about tying tube flies call us or come into the shop and we will walk you through the whole process.

Henry’s Fork 3-9

Drift boat fishing on the Henry’s Fork is not possible right now because all of the boat ramps are still snowed in. However fishing has been really productive on the Henry’s Fork. Midges are being taken on the surface. Glo Bugs,  San Juan worms, Rubber leg stonefly nymphs and Zebra Midges are producing fish in good numbers. As the warm weather continues it will not be long until Blue Wing Olives and March Browns will be hatching. Good places to walk in and fish is the confluence at Warm River, Vernon Bridge (don’t fish above the bridge…its closed!) Sealy’s, Chester Dam, The Fun Farm, and below St. Anthony.

South Fork 3-9

Flows on the South Fork have dropped again to 1000 cfs at the Dam. With the decreased snow fall in the mountains this year the Bureau of Reclamation is trying to store as much water as they can. This will not directly effect the fishing this time of year. However remember that floating the river takes more time with the decreased flows. If you are going to float we recommend short 3 mile floats, these will take you the majority of the day. However we suggest you wade fish.

Dead drift nymphs 7-8 feet below an indicator. Use a #6 or #8  Rubber leg stonefly nymph, bead head nymphs size 16-18, also Glo bugs and San Juan worms. There has also been success with Super-X’s dead drifted below a indicator and being swung through deep pools. Midges are still hatching but are very inconsistent, look for fish eating them in the foam lines.

Today at Jimmy’s 3-8

Well its Monday morning and the sun is shinning and Jimmy and I are here at the shop. We both wish we could be fishing on this beautiful morning but someones gotta sell you guys all this stuff. I was looking at the weather report for the week and this would be a great week to dust off the fly rod put your waders on and hit the rivers. The average high temperature is going to be in low 40’s all week.

This last Saturday was a really good fly tying demo. We really enjoyed have Lawrence here tying. He did such a great job and really showed many of you the advantage of tube flies. Randy will be making DVD’s for the shop and you can come check them out.

Sale!!! We are have a sale going on with our Simms shirts. Buy one Simms shirt and get a Redington long sleeve shirt for free! We also have selected men’s cloudveil pants at 40% off retail price.

South Fork 3-5

We have many customers calling and coming to talk to us about fishing on the South Fork today. While fishing on the South Fork is good right now, floating the river is not your best option. Right now the flows are lower than they have been all winter. Flows out of the Dam are around 1200 cfs. This means that a 3 mile float is going to take you all day to float. Snow removal is not maintained on the boat ramps during the winter. All of the Swan Valley boat ramps are snowed in and not accessible with a truck and trailer. The only boat ramps that are open on the river is Wolf and Byington. Byington however is iced over and requires chains, and 4×4 drive to get your truck out of the ramp.

With the flows being this low walk in access is very good. We suggest Heise Bridge, Wolf Flats, Kelley Island, Spring Creek Bridge, and Fall Creek. Access to the Canyon road is closed above Wolf Flats but the fishing is accesable along this road up to that point. From the road closure you can walk in but no vehicles are allowed to protect wintering wildlife. Catching fish has been productive with Rubberleg Nymphs , Beadhead nymphs and midges on top. There has been some productivity on Streamers but you must present them extremely slow because the fish are not that active. Concentrate your fishing during the warmest part of the day and you should find some success during this spell of warm weather. For any more information or questions call us here at the shop.
