October 2010

Yellowstone Park 10-24-10

First of all,  come dressed for winter fishing!  Stay warm & dry in order to enjoy top water fishing on the Firehole River where BWOs are out in big numbers.  In every water that hosts brown trout, streamer fishing is the way to go.  In waters without browns, streamers presented in deep waters will bring results from big cutts, brookies and ‘bows seeking forage fish. Fishing season closes the first weekend of November, so not much time is left this year to enjoy waters here.

Small Streams 10-24-10

Many of these are shutting down now.   With lower flows and fewer insects available, fish move to bigger waters during winter months where there is better cover and more abundant food.  But some good fishing remains.   Concentrate your efforts on deeper waters. The lower Blackfoot River has many deeper pockets and holes where a well placed streamer  is sure to bring results.  The same can be said for the lower Teton River and Robinson Creek.  On streams pretty much influenced by springs, good caddis and BWO emergences continue. Examples are Warm River just below Warm River Spring and Birch Creek in the family area.

Big Lost River 10-24-10

Flow out of Mackay Dam is at 100 cfs, so walk-in wade fishing is easy.  These low flows concentrate fish into deeper waters, so look for fish working at tops and bottoms of deep water to intercept emerging BWOs and midges.  Life cycle patterns for both are the way to go.

Henry’s Fork 10-24-10

Above Ashton Reservoir expect lower flows than normal for the rest of the year to help during the Ashton Dam repair project.  It appears that the repair project is being conducted in a manner as friendly as possible to the river.  Below Ashton Dam flows are closer to normal, browns are migrating to spawning areas, and BWO emergences are in full swing.  That makes for some good dry fly fishing and daytime streamer fishing.  Try being on the river early & late in the day during cloudy conditions for best results, especially when streamer fishing.

Main Stem Snake River 10-24-10

Flows are right where they should be for this time of year, and big browns are migrating to spawning areas, also as they should be.   You best be fishing streamers to encounter them.  Both float and walk-in wade fishing will be effective. Flows are sure to drop further in the upcoming weeks, so look for some great streamer fishing until ice-up.   We can help you choose locations up & down the river.  C’mon in and talk to us about “the where to try it” question.

Henry’s Lake 10-24-10

Fishing has been good to great depending where you are on the lake.  Earlier this week we fished the shallows at the timbered shoreline just north of Pintail Point.  Schools of cutts were moving around and provided great action.  We also hooked up a few brookies.  To do all this we used intermediate lines to present bead head peacock leeches and bead head brown mohair leeches, both in sizes 6-10.   Good action from brookies can be found in front of creek mouths all around the lake, cutts are everywhere, and as we said in the last report, hybrids are where you find them.  Good action continues along the west shoreline, in front of the cliffs and from the hatchery to Wild Rose.   With some stormy weather moving in look for the great fishing to continue if you bundle up and stay dry.

South Fork 10-24-10

Too bad we all can’t fish like Tim in the company of the IDF&G shocking crew!   But they are sampling the fish population to get info for maintaining the great South Fork fishing we enjoy so much.   Right now flow out of Palisades Dam is around 3200 cfs with flow at Heise around 3400 cfs.  Walk in-wade fishing is at its best this time of year with so many accessible spots up and down the river.    We can help you find some of the best–so c’mon in and talk to us. With some stormy weather coming up look for BWO activity to provide some great action during the next week.   Thanks to lower flows your choice of riffles is never ending.   Streamer fishing is now at its peak and definitely the way to encounter those big browns.  Use streamers in darker colors and others in lighter colors (yellow or chartreuse seem very effective in attracting browns) and a sink tip line.  Choose low light conditions, and with stormy conditions even daytime can be a good time for streamers.

South Fork 10/20

Had the best day of fishing yesterday in my life! We caught around 500 fish. I used a great fly called the Electric Copper Bob, Fish can’t help but swim to this fly.  My arms are sore from catching fish. Every fish was measured and recorded that we caught, thanks to Brett High for such a great day!

Disclaimer: Due to the amount of phone calls we have received about the Electric Copper Bob, I need to inform you that this fly is best fished with a generator and 1/2″ Round Steel Cable for tippet. Its also a good idea to go with the Idaho Fish and Game so you don’t end up in jail.

South Fork 10/18

Flows have dropped to 4,000cfs. Fishing remains the same as last week. Check our earlier reports for in depth fishing. A whole lot of Blue Wings and Nymphing. Waiting for some colder weather to turn on the streamer fishing.

Small Streams 10-15-10

Flow in lower Blackfoot River is at normal levels for this time of year.   Expect good wet fly fishing throughout.  The river below Warm River Spring  has a great BWO hatch and a few October caddis.  Streamers are effective on the lower Teton River.  Action on many smaller waters is slowing down as base flow levels are approached and insect activity slows.  Birch Creek in the family area is an exception with ongoing BWO & midge hatches and a few October caddis.
