Big Lost River 11-05-10

Because of overhead cover from cottonwoods, BWO emergences go on even on sunny days. Midges emerge all day here. With flows out of Mackay Dam around 100 cfs, walk-in wade fishing is great.  So get out and enjoy this great little river before winter sets in.

Henry’s Fork 11-05-10

As with the South Fork and main stem Snake River flows are down, so wading is a great  way to approach the river.  Best streamer fishing on the upper river is in Box Canyon where big bows are moving in for the winter.  On the lower river browns are moving throughout. Low water means they will be concentrated during daytime, but migrating during low light conditions.  Next week with a change in the weather for the worse coming will be a great time to encounter them.  The change will also mean good BWO activity. So take your pick for next week: BWO life cycle patterns or streamers!

Main Stem Snake River 11-5-10

Flows have dropped to normal levels, meaning that as with the South Fork much of the river is in great shape for walk-in wading.  It is time to use streamer patterns, and with a change in the weather coming big browns will be on the move.  Best times will be evenings and early AMs.  But with cloudy and stormy conditions predicted for much of next week, any time will provide a chance for that big guy to respond. Remember that a streamer featuring yellow or chartreuse will seem particularly effective and that sink tip lines and stout leaders will be the best tackle to use.

Henry’s Lake 11-5-10

Right now Henry’s Lake is the star of eastern Idaho’s fishing show.   Go there and you will have your chances for beautiful cutts and brookies and hard fighting hybrids.  Here’s some “where and how”  information.  Water temps are in the mid forties. Fish are in shallow water all around the lake. That means use either an intermediate  or slow sinking line. Use a stout leader(1x or 2x) with either. Effective flies to our knowledge include brown or purple Canadian mohair leeches (with bead), bead head peacock leech, California leech, and halloween, all in sizes 6-10. We have all these in stock.  Locations you ask? Hybrids seem scattered around the lake.  Lots of cutts and brookies are cruising along the shoreline within easy casting reach at the State Park, but a lot of folks are there.  From here walk over to Howard Creek where fish are fewer, but so are anglers.  It is very easy to launch a float tube or pontoon boat at the State Park to get out in the lake a few hundred feet and have great fishing back toward the shoreline.  Anywhere along the north shore you will find good numbers of cutts and brookies cruising.  The hatchery makes for good access for either wading or launching a float tube or pontoon boat.  So does the pull-out at the northwest corner of the lake above Pintail Point.  Wade the shallows in front of the tree line on the north shore.  Fish are also present in shallows along the west shore line and in front of the cliffs but boating is the best way to fish.  For the next day or two weather looks fantastic at the lake.   Next week will be a different story, so plan for wind, squalls and cold air temps then.

South Fork 11/4

Flows have dropped on the South Fork to 1100cfs. This will be the winter flow for the river. Unless something drastically changes we do not expect the flows to drop anymore. All sections of the river are accessible by boat, however we suggest that you choose to float short 3 to 5 mile sections of the river. This distance at these low flows will take all day. We also suggest this is a great time to just leave the boat at home and wade fish the river. There are many spots to wade fish and with fall and winter fishing conditions it is much easier to find a few holes of fish and work them, compared to floating all day continually looking for fish on the banks.

The streamer fishing is doing well, Blue Wing Olives are still hatching thanks to the warm weather. Good numbers of fish are also being caught nymhping, and yes it is that time of year for glo bugs.

South Fork 11/1

Flows dropped Sat. to 2500 cfs. This really opens up the possibilities of wade fishing on the river. Nymphing, streamers below the surface. Blue Wing Olives, and Midges on top. Look for fish to be concentrated into one area or hole. Back eddies, foam lines on slow moving banks are great spots for fish to stack up. The weather is going to stay warm this week so get out there and catch some fish.
