Henry’s Fork 5/7

Couple items to talk about for the Henry’s Fork. I have been watching the flows on the Fall River and it looks like we are starting into runoff…finally. This means that the water below Chester Dam is going to be off color and when it really starts roaring it will be muddy. Warm River will put some off color water into the river but the float from Warm River to Ashton will still be fishable. Vernon to Chester will be fishing as well. Remember that Box Canyon is open and as soon as we hear the snow has melted we will let you know when you can get into the boat ramps.

Good Caddis, Blue Wing olive, and March Browns have been hatching on the river. I like to fish a little bit larger Caddis pattern that is often a different color than the caddis hatching. This gives you a little different look than what the fish are seeing and sometimes can be to your advantage. Blue Wing Olive and March Brown Emerger patterns seem to have the best success. Nymphing and streamer fishing continue to produce fish as well. Some really good spring fishing on the Henry’s Fork, and it is possible to find water that is not getting highly effected by the runoff.

Today at Jimmy’s 5/7

So much has been going on this spring in the shop. We are finished with our remodel and I will be posting photos of the shop at a later date. We got a new rod rack, moved the fly bins and opened up some space in the shop. Everything looks really good. We have gotten most of our spring preseason orders in and the shop is look nice a full of merchandise ready for you to check out.

A couple new items in the shop for you to check out is the Patagonia Gear. We are now a Patagonia Dealer. We have waders, boots, clothes and bags.  Also Sage has a new rod out this season called the VXP. It is a really nice fly rod, words can not really describe how nice it is you just need to come cast it.

We are always looking for more photos for our photo gallery. We like catch and release type photos. If you have a bit of the shutterbug send those photos to us at [email protected].

Small Streams 5-4-2011

Birch Creek at the family area and in the diversion are fishing quite well.   Small nymphs and peacock woolly worms remain the best patterns, but BWOs are becoming more active during afternoons.  So top water fishing will pick up.

Still Waters 5-4-2011

All these are improving, so get those belly-boats and pontoon boats ready!  For all these places small leech and damselfly nymph patterns as well as midge pupa under an indicator work best.  The best fishing on Chesterfield Res. is from the Toponce diversion over to the dam.  Concentrate in front of the willows and in the shallows.  At Daniels Res. try the north end.   The road over Dairy Creek  Summit is open.  At Twenty-Four Mile Res. the last 100 yards or so of the road remains snow covered.  At Hawkins Reservoir in front of the dam and parallel to the highway is best fishing.   Springfield Reservoir remains only fair fishing, looks like a warming trend will help action there.   No report on fishing at Treasureton Res yet.

Henry’s Fork 5/4

The Henry’s Fork is fishing so well right now. The Mother’s Day Caddis have started hatching from Warm River down to Chester. March Browns are also hatching. The Caddis hatch is unbelievable, literally hundreds of thousands of caddis hatching. If you have never seen it before its worth taking a day just to see the hatch. Fish have been keying in on the mMarch Brown’s and than seem to take a break during the Caddis hatch. With all the bugs hatching at once its tough to even fish your fly, but put on a bigger fly that is a different color. Changing it up might be your ticket to catching a fish.

South Fork 5/4

Flows have begun to drop on the South Fork, this morning they are at 14000 cfs. However I would not get your hopes up thinking its all over, because it is not. I expect flows to get back up to at least 20,000cfs before July. The reservoir is now down to 12% and they simply need to shut down the outflow of the reservoir before it is emptied. Fishing is still going to be all about nymphs. Stonefly nymphs in a size 8 with a San Juan worm, or a glo bug. You can use a pheasant tail or a big prince nymph, fly choice is not as crucial as getting them on the bottom. Look for slower moving water and deep pools the fish will be concentrated in these areas.
