Stillwater 5-4-16

Fishing is starting to pick up on all area reservoirs open to fishing. Daniels, Chesterfield, Springfield, Hawkins, etc…. Most good fishing has been on indicators fishing with Chironomids in the deeper water. Focus on water around the 10-20 ft range, start on the bottom and work your way up from there. Fish will often be suspended this time of year to intercept chironomid pupa on their way to the surface. Patterns like the chromie size 12-14, black sally 12-14, summer duck pupa 12-14, and the bungie buzzers in 12 have been effective. Leech fisherman are still finding some action fishing shallow early and late and out deep during the day. Use an intermediate in the shallow stuff and a type III out in the deeper water. Any dark leech patterns should produce well. Fishing should only continue to improve as the water warms up so be sure to check back often for reports.

Today at Jimmy’s 12/5/14

As many of you know, we have been remodeling for the past few weeks here in the shop. Well, we are finally finished! The shop is looking great and just in time for our weekly fly tying demonstrations. We had Gary Barnes tie in the shop last week and this week Greg Messel will be tying for us. Greg will also have a knot tying workshop at the end of his tying demo that is free and available for anyone who wants to participate. This will be a great chance to polish your knot tying skills, you may even learn a new knot or two. The demo will start at 10 A.M. and go into the afternoon. We hope to see you all there!

Gregg received a Lee Wulff Garcia fiberglass fly rod on his tenth birthday. It’s still in his rod collection.  He grew up fishing for panfish and bass in Indiana while dreaming of trout fishing in the West.  He caught his first trout at age 16 in Rocky Mountain National Park. He was hooked!  He began tying flies in 1972 for catching Missouri hatchery trout while attending college.  The same year he obtained a copy of Garcia’s fishing annual and began dreaming of fishing Montana rivers featured in that magazine. In 1973 he was off to Montana to sight see and fly fish. Now hooked even more deeply, he vowed to retire there, and meanwhile increased his fly fishing experience by fishing around our great country and in Europe. His vow came true when he settled in Three Forks in 1990.  His flies are easy to tie and effective. He titles his demo “Fun with Foam.” So bring your notebooks and questions and enjoy Gregg’s first demo at Jimmy’s. But that’s not all Gregg will do at Jimmy’s on Saturday, December 6th.

Stillwater/Henry’s Lake 11-11-14

With the recent cold weather snap we are having, the open water fishing on Henry’s Lake is probably done for the year. The lake will most likely be frozen over within a week or so if these conditions continue. If by some chance the weather warms up and the lake stays open, look for fish to be extremely scattered and suspended in deeper water. However, if you are into ice fishing, you have until January 1st to enjoy the great ice fishing opportunity Henry’s presents.

Stillwaters to the South should continue to fish okay, but this extreme cold weather is really going to slow things down. Be sure to cover a lot of water when fishing this time of year! Springfield reservoir is one exception here, fishing seems to be excellent down there as long as you can stand the cold. Fishing small chironomid pupa (size 14-20) under an indicator typically produces best.  Springfield was stocked recently so there should be plenty of 17″+ fish down there willing to take a fly.

Conditions are constantly changing this time of year, so be sure to give us a call or stop in for up to the minute information!

New Lorenzo Ramp Open!

The new Lorenzo boat ramp is now open! This will be a big improvement over the old ramp and will provide use for years to come. The old ramp is now demolished an unusable. The new ramp is located about 1/2 mile downstream from the old one on river left (opposite side from old ramp). Access to the new ramp is off the Menan/Roberts exit off Highway 20.

Henry’s Lake & Stillwater 10-31-14

Henry’s Lake has been fishing well this past week. Things seem to have finally turned around up there. Fish have been caught on the west shore from Duck Creek to Staley Springs, The Northshore, the Cliffs, and State Park area. Water from 2-8ft deep has been most productive, fish that with an intermediate or type II line and hang on. Fly patterns that have been producing are black crystal buggers, midnight fire, and Lt. Olive and Tan crystals. Get up there while you can, any time you are able to fish on Henry’s after the end of October is on borrowed time. Only a matter of time before the lake will be frozen solid.

Other Stillwaters in the area have been fishing well lately too. Daniels and Springfield have been the most consistent fishing. Chironomids (any color size 10-18) under indicators and leech patterns mentioned above in the Henry’s lake portion have been the best patterns. Fishing in the late morning/afternoon has produced better then being out there at first light. Chesterfield is the one lake in the area we have not heard anything good lately. We have received a lot of calls regarding this very popular lake and the news just isn’t good. I believe two consecutive years of extreme drawdown and summer heat have had an impact. There are still some very nice, maybe the nicest in the area, fish to be had, but they are few and far between. If you do decide to head up there, fish hard and cover a lot of water! Hebgen, Hawkins, and Island Park have all been fishing good lately too, toughest decision this time of year is just deciding where to fish!

Please give us a call or stop in if you have any questions on the local stillwater scene!

Henry’s Lake 10-20-14

Henry’s Lake has been fishing okay lately, right on the cusp of really turning loose. We need some colder, nastier, cloudier weather to really get things going, weather has just been too nice! Focus on all the typical fall areas; Duck Creek, Hatchery, State Park, Cliffs, Duck Creek, and County boat dock. Until the colder weather shows up, fish a little deeper water then you typically would this time of year. Darker Leeches, Lt. Olive Crystal, Henrys Lake Renegade, and Henrys Lake Scud have all been producing well. Look for things to really turn on here in the next week or so!

Henry’s Lake 9/22/14

Henry’s is fishing okay right now, but is sure to improve as we move deeper into the fall. Water temperatures are in the mid-upper fifties and the water is clear. It doesn’t seem like fish have moved shallow into their typical fall haunts just yet. Best success has come from water in the 6-12ft range on the West, North, and South shores of the lake. Weeds have really died off on the entire lake and this should expose a lot of willing, hungry fish if you can find them. Fish darker leech patterns or cyrstals in sizes 6-12 on type 1 (intermediate) and type two lines. Best advice we can give right now is to be mobile, if you aren’t catching fish within an hour of being in a new area, move. People who are covering the most water seem to be doing best. If I was headed up to fish in the next week or so, I would check out the Cliffs, Duck Creek, or the Pintail Point area of the lake.

Fish will continue to move shallow in the coming weeks and we should have some excellent fishing in the next couple of weeks. Get out there and enjoy some good fishing! Please feel free to call us for up to the minute reports.

We also have a really cool new fly box in from Tacky fly fishing. These boxes use silicone instead of foam and have small offset slits to slide the hook into. With silicone, flies wont move or fall out of place. Unlike foam, the silicone will last for a very long time and never stretch/wear out. This is the perfect fly box!

Two new rod series from Sage!

Sage is constantly moving forward with rod design and this year is no different. Sage is introducing two new rod series this summer; The Salt (to replace the classic XI3) and the Accel (to replace the VXP). Below is some additional information on these two new rod series. If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call here at the shop! We should be getting these new rods in sometime around the first week of August.

The new SALT series is, you guessed it, an all-new addition to Sage’s saltwater lineup that will replace the Xi3 series. The new SALT rods are Sage’s first saltwater fly rods built on its newer Konnetic technology, which Sage’s very popular and award-winning ONE and METHOD series of rods are built upon. Like all of the Konnetic-built rods, Sage has proclaimed a focus on quick loading, high line speeds and pinpoint accuracy when developing the SALT series. According to chief rod designer Jerry Siem, “The ability to adapt to quickly changing conditions is imperative when saltwater fishing, and Konnetic Technology allows deft sensitivity and the ability to track extremely straight. The new SALT shines in all fishing scenarios.”

The SALT rods feature a dark sapphire blank with distinctive black wraps, oversized Fuji ceramic stripper guides, hard chromed snake guides and an anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat which includes a hidden hook keeper. The SALT series has offerings from weight 5 through 16. All of the rods in the series have an MSRP of $850 and are slated to be available come August 2014.

Also coming from Sage in August is the New Sage Accel Fly Rod

The Sage ACCEL fly rod series is a new medium-fast action rod series that includes single hand, switch and spey rods. For the ACCEL fly rod Sage has reinvented its G5 blank technology that was so well loved in the now classic Z-Axis series and the VXP series that the Sage ACCEL fly rods will replace.

According to Siem, Sage “[added] a graphite hoop core and axial fiber material in the new Generation 5 technology [which] allowed for a lighter, ultra-responsive, and livelier blank with a narrower shaft.” The result is a rod that Siem says “permits anglers to feel the rod load for optimum casting control.”

The Sage ACCEL fly rods feature an emerald green blank color with, like the Sage SALT fly rod series, distinctive black wraps, Fuji ceramic stripper guides and hard-chromed snake guides. Reel seat and cork configurations vary depending on rod model.

Sage Accel Fly Rods new 2014 reviews

Sage ACCEL single hand fly rods range in weights from 3 to 9 and are priced at $595. Switch rods come in weights 6 to 8 and are priced at $695. Spey rods will be available in weights 6 to 8, for $750. All ACCEL models will be available in August 2014.

Head North for good Stillwater action

Area stillwaters have slowed down for the most part due to the summer heat and water levels being drawn down. The reservoirs to the southeast have been most affected by the summer heat. The only real option on lakes like Daniels and Chesterfield is fishing deep and fishing early. Fast sinking lines and deep indicator fishing with double chironomid set ups have been most productive.

Lakes and Reservoirs to the North have fared a little better as far as water levels and water temperatures. We have received good reports from Hebgen, Cliff, Wade, Island Park, and Henry’s Lake in the past week. Henry’s Lake has been fishing well around the Targhee Creek area early in the morning with patterns like the Henry’s Lake Pheasant tail, Henry’s Lake Renegade, Lt. Olive Crystal, and Henry’s Lake scud. Concentrate on shallow water early and work your way to deeper water as the sun continues to rise.

The Sand Creek Ponds have been fishing well lately too. After a slow opener, things seem to have picked up a little bit. The best fishing has been early and late in the day with damsel and Callibaetis nymphs under an indicator. On certain days, the dry fly fishing on Callibaetis spinners has been very good. If you prefer to fish sinking lines, a slow sinking line and darker brown/olive mohair leeches have been producing well.
