South Fork 6/29/13

The South Fork is fishing great right now! There are all sorts of bugs out and the fish seem to be looking up for all of them. Fish are being caught on the banks with adult salmonfly and golden stone patterns. The CFO Flamer ant and Pink ant #8, Jakes Hot Cake Salmonfly #6, and Berrett’s Golden stone in sz’s 8-12 have all been producing well. Fishing earlier in the morning has been better for throwing the big bugs. Later in the morning and throughout the day,the PMD’s have been coming off thick in the riffles and people have been having luck throwing flies like the Pink Comparadun in a #16-18, PMD hunchback emerger in #16-18, and the CFO pink spinner in #18. The whole river is fishing really good and last we heard the big bugs were up around Conant. We will continue to update our reports throughout the salmonfly hatch as we hear more information on where the bugs are at. Stop in at the shop on your way up to pick up what ever you need and get the most up to date information!

Stillwater 6/28/13

Damsels continue to dominate the stillwater scene right now and with the warmer temps ahead, the real good fishing might only last a couple more weeks. Dry dropper setups, damsels under indicators, and damsels fished with slow sinking lines are still fishing well, I have done the best with the dark olive bead head damsel in a size 10 we have in the shop. All area lakes are experiencing damsel hatches right now and should all be fishing well with the techniques mentioned above.

There have been some really nice fish caught this spring on area reservoirs so if you haven’t had a piece of the action you need to get out.  Call us in the shop for fresh reports on area lakes.

Henry’s Fork 6-24-13

Fishing on the Henry’s Fork is very good right now. There are a bunch of bugs hatching and the fish are looking up.  The entire river is fishing well, but we have heard very good things on the river below Ashton and up in the Ranch/Woodroad #16 area.  Everything from Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, Flavs, Caddis, and PMD’s are coming off. Fish were really keying on the drakes last week so make sure you have plenty of drake patterns on you. Nymphing with a rubberleg/attractor dropper set up and Streamer fishing have been very good too…  Get out there while its hot!

Today at Jimmys 6-20-13

Rio has been making great fly lines for a long time and their new line promises to continue that tradition. We just received a few of the new “Perception” lines from Rio and they look awesome!  The new Perception is built with a super low stretch “ConnectCore” that improves sensitivity for better cast timing, easier line lift, and precise mending. The line also is Tri-colored to help with accuracy and distance control. Rio offers the line in weights 3-8 in a green/tamo/can color combination. We would be happy to show you these new lines in the shop so come down and check them out! Also, be sure to check out the video posted below to see and hear all about the new Perception.

Warmwater 6-18-13

With trout fishing taking center stage in the area, there aren’t many people who make it out after warmwater species throughout the summer. That is a mistake though, as this time of year can provide awesome fishing for bass, carp, and bluegill.

Bluegill fishing has been good on Preston area reservoirs when the weather cooperates. The wind from this past weekend made it tough to locate bluegill, but the fishing will be good again with consistent weather. The bluegill fishing has been weird so far this year, but I think the best is yet to come. If you make it out and find the bluegill all the traditional patterns like san juan worms, bluegill candy, bream poppers, and small beadhead nymphs will take fish.
Carp fishing has been red hot on Blackfoot Reservoir. We have heard more then a few reports this past week about excellent fishing in most any shallow bay with lots of smaller 5-12lb fish showing up with the occasional 20+lb big boy. I would make sure and have flies like Lukes carp candy and Dan’s crayfish up there with me.
Bass fishing remains good in the area for both Large and Smallmouth. This is peak time to hit Ririe Reservoir for smallmouth with small streamers and poppers. The American falls area continues to fish well, although I would start fishing a little bit deeper 5-12 ft of water with the warmer temps we have been experiencing. The largemouth fishing down around Preston has been great if you can get there early, and I don’t mean 8 or 9 o’clock early. I have been down Largemouth fishing quite a bit and once the sun comes up the quality bass really slow down and pull back into cover or move out deeper. If you can fish them when the sun isn’t on the water, it can be pretty good. Bigger crayfish and Clouser minnow type patterns is what I would be throwing for Largmouth and Smallies.

Stillwaters 6-18-13

Area stillwaters are fishing well right now. We have heard good reports from Daniels, Chesterfield, Twenty Four Mile, and Springfield. Damsels are dominating right now and probably will until the lakes get too warm. The damsel hatch can be some of the best fishing of the year and can even provide you with some rare, dry fly action.  When fishing the damsel hatch though, you need to be ready to switch up your presentation. I would mix it up between throwing damsels on really slow sinking lines like the “Hover” line from Rio, put a pair of damsels patterns under an indicator, or fish a dry damsel with a dropper below. The fish seem to respond differently in each lake around the area so play around with it until you figure out the presentation they want. We have quite a few new damsel patterns in the shop that would be worth checking out if you haven’t been in to see them.

Today at Jimmy’s

For all you Steelheaders out there we just received the new Skagit Master 4 DVD “cracking the code”. I have not watched it yet but I am sure it will be just as good as the previous three with a little more fishing in this one.

Second is a new book called “Fly Fishing for Carp” written by Kirk Deeter. Fly Fishing for carp is pretty popular in the area and this would be a great book to read over and pick up some new tips and flies from. If the carp thing is something you enjoy or want to learn more about, this book is a must have.

Warmwater 6-10-13

Bluegill are finally being caught with some consistency down at Twin Lakes. We have been hearing a mixed bag of reports from down there but it seems like this last warm spell has finally got them going. With the water situation we have this year though, traditional bluegill areas might not be as good in years past. If you don’t find them where you usually do just keep searching and checking out different areas until you find them, they are there. We have been hearing good reports from other Preston area lakes like Winder and Lamont so hopefully the Bluegill fishing will be good the next couple of weeks.

Bass fishing is good and will continue to get better, especially for Largemouth. Any Preston area lake you like to fish would be good, but I would pay special attention to Twin Lakes and Glendale for Largemouth.  If you prefer Smallmouth, American Falls Reservoir and the Snake below are fishing very well right now. Its spawning time for smallies so look for them to be in shallow water and very aggressive.

Carp fishing at Blackfoot Reservoir and the Snake River is great right now. This is a fun time of year to sight cast to carp if weather permits. If you get a windy day, fish any good looking flat and look for mud lines to signal the carp are feeding. Fly choice won’t be terribly important, I would start big and go smaller if the carp aren’t responding to the bigger stuff. San Juan Worms always work………..

Stillwaters 6-10-13

Stillwaters in the area are fishing well right now. Damsels are hatching on most area lakes and the fish are going to be looking for them. I like to fish Damsels under an indicator this time of year but stripping damsels in with an intermediate or super slow sinking “hover” line works great too. The Rio Camolux and Rio Hover lines are great for that type of fishing. Callibaetis are also hatching and the fish seem to key on them early before the damsels really get going. As far as where to go Twenty Four mile, Springfield, Chesterfield, Daniels, Hawkins, and Island Park reservoir are all fishing well.

If you enjoy Stillwater fishing, I would get out soon and as often as possible. The fishing is good right now and the weather isn’t too terribly hot yet.
