Today at Jimmy’s 6-10-13

Pretty much everyone likes to fish streamers and even if you don’t, chances are you know all about Kelly Galloup and his innovative fly patterns. We have a new DVD from Galloup in the store called “Streamers on Steroids”. In this DVD Kelly personally ties five of his patters including the: Nancy P, Barely Legal, Tips up, Boogie Man, and the Pearl necklace.  People are always wanting to know how to tie Galloups patterns and I can’t think of any better way then to watch the man himself do it. So if you have always wanted to try these patterns out, swing by the shop, pick this DVD up, and get to tying!

Today at Jimmy’s 5-3-13

Now that the temperature is starting to rise, I wanted to show you guys an awesome shirt we are carrying to keep cool this summer out on the water. The new shirt is from a company called ” FreeFly” and it is made out of bamboo. You read right, bamboo! I thought it sounded crazy but after fishing in this shirt for the past couple months, I can tell you this is one of the best fishing shirts I have ever worn. The shirt fits perfect, not too loose or too tight and breathes incredibly well.  There is so much to like about this shirt but here is some information directly from FreeFly;

  • Moisture wicking = a light yet strong material that keeps skin dry
  • Thermal regulating fabric = keeps body temperature a few degrees warmer in winter and cooler in summer
  • Antibacterial/Anti-odor = bamboo fibers naturally resists trapping odors, due to a unique bacteriostatis agent found in bamboo called “bamboo kun” (which means NO more worrying about smelling like campfire smoke the morning after)
  • Anti-itch = bamboo material is soft and non-irritating (even to sensitive skin!) due to the smooth structure of its fibers
  • Antistatic = bamboo material naturally eliminate the buildup of static electricity
  • Biodegradable = bamboo material can be broken down in a reasonable amount of time, decomposing back into a natural element
  • Environmentally Sustainable = bamboo is grown without using pesticides, thus does not pollute ground water or air (also, bamboo forests serve as carbon sinks, a very useful tool with climate change)
  • Breathable = the structure of bamboo fibers make bamboo fabrics more breathable than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics

As you can see this is a sweet shirt and one worth checking out! We have a bunch of different colors and each shirt has our logo on the back. Come by the shop and check them out!

Warmwater 5-24-13

If you are a warmwater fly fisherman now is the time to get out and really start chasing bass, bluegill, carp, etc….. We have been hearing good reports on the warmwater fishing from all over the area.

Bluegill– Although the water is a little lower then what we would typically like to see at Twin Lakes, we have heard of fisherman doing well on bluegill this past week. Any shallow structure you can find in the lake is likely to have bluegill on it. Fish to these fish either under an indicator with small nymph patterns or even try a popper if the fish are aggressive. The Bluegill fishing should continue to get better in the coming week in all of the Preston area reservoirs containing Bluegill.

Carp– Any shallow bay on blackfoot reservoir or on the lower Snake is fishing great for carp right now. If you can choose a day to fish, pick a day in which the weather has been consistent a day or two prior. Any of the carp flies we carry in the shop paired with a full floating line will work great on both places.

Bass– Smallmouth in Ririe and the lower Snake are active right now and this is a great time of year to get into a bigger fish. I like fishing crayfish or clouser minnow/baitfish type patterns on an intermediate line. Fishing out of a boat is nice, but not necessary. Right now and the next couple weeks is peak Smallmouth time, so if this is something you like doing or wanna try get out there and do it! The Largemouth fishing really turned on this past week down around Preston. I visited a couple lakes down there and found the bass had moved into very shallow water and for the most part, were very willing to eat. Any bigger leech pattern will work on the largemouth right now. Switch up your retrieve to see what kind of mood they are in. The largemouth fishing will be good all the way through the summer and as it warms up poppers can be a great way to take these bass as well.

Warmwater 5-14-13

Alright I am excited we now have a section of the fishing reports strictly devoted to the warmwater opportunities in the region! There are a lot of people in the area that really enjoy this type of fishing and it is a fun alternative to the trout fishing we have. We are lucky enough to live in an area where within just a couple hours or so of the shop you can fish for big Smallmouth/Largemouth Bass, perch, bluegill, crappie, catfish, carp and even some tiger musky (although there aren’t a ton of those!). All of these present an awesome challenge on a fly rod and typically fish well all through the summer. So, hopefully a lot of you will use these warmwater reports to help plan your own trip, or maybe convince you to try the warmwater gig for the first time!

Right now we are in the beginning stages of the warmwater fishing really kicking into gear. Smallmouth bass are already being caught on the lower Snake River and the smallmouth at Ririe shouldn’t be too far behind as the warm weather continues to move in. Smallmouth will move into really shallow water as it warms up in the spring to get ready for the spawn. This is the best time of year for a fly guy to get into a good fish as most are in water from 2-6ft and will readily take the same streamers you use to catch trout. Largemouth Bass like warmer water then Smallmouth so they are just beginning to wake up in some of the SE Idaho lakes. Until it warms up look for Largemouth to be in areas where they have easy access to both shallow and deep water. The same baitfish imitations you use for trout will work on these early season Largemouth. I have been fishing for Largemouth the last couple weeks and although it isn’t easy fishing, the rewards can be awesome. Most the fish I have seen have been in 5-12 ft of water and aren’t real aggressive so a slower approach has worked better for me.

The favorite warmwater fish of the area for most is probably the Bluegill. If you have never tried fishing for Bluegill, you need to do it, those little fish are a blast! I was talking to Jimmy in the shop today about Bluegill and he seemed to think that by this weekend, you could find them back in the trees of Twin Lakes. If we get a cold snap that will push the bluegill back out deeper, but as long as we have decent weather look for the fishing to really heat up! Twin Lakes, Winder, Lamont, Johnson, and really most of the Preston area lakes can have good bluegill fishing, although Twin is the most popular. If you find the bluegill small poppers, and any small beadhead nymphs will get the job done.

As always, we have everything you need to set you up for this type of fishing and anyone in the shop would be happy to help you with any questions you might have about the warmwater fishing in the area.

Stillwaters 4-27-13

Well….. its that time of year again, FINALLY!  Now is the time to really start hitting our local stillwaters. I was out yesterday fishing various southeast idaho lakes and experienced some awesome chironomid fishing. The fish were in great shape and look like they wintered very well. Any darker chironomid in a size 12-14 and around 8-12 ft of water worked best. Leech fishing was slow yesterday, but that will improve as the weather continues to get nicer. Expect Chesterfield, Daniels, Springfield, etc to be fishing well and continue to improve with the weather. If you aren’t set up or fully stocked  for the stillwater fishing this year we have the flies, lines, tying materials, float tubes, anything you need to get ready. Call or stop in at the shop with any questions or for updated reports!

Today at Jimmy’s 4-23

Hey guys we have a a bunch of new stuff in the shop to tell you about! First we received a big order in from Simms with a bunch of new stuff for the upcoming summer fishing season. New technical fishing shirts, shorts, button up shirts, t shirts, waders, phone covers, you name it we have it. Here is a picture showing some of the new stuff but this is hardly everything we got, so come down to the shop and check some of this new stuff out!

Second is a cool hook from Gamakatsu we are now carrying, the C12 scud hook. Everyone knows the quality of a Gamakatsu hook and traditionally we have carried these hooks for Steelhead fishing/tying and other big fish applications. It will be awesome to incorporate this quality hook into smaller bugs. I have tied a few flies with C12 and it is a very strong, very sharp hook. We carry sizes 10-20 but for some reason they don’t carry an 18, come check them out!

South Fork 3-26-13

Jimmy fished this weekend and did very well swinging small midge patterns and softhackles. Streamer fishing also produced in the deep, slow runs. Fishing should only get better with this nice weather we are having so get out there!

Henry’s Fork 3-26-13

Fishing on the Henrys Fork is really good right now.  I fished around Ashton and around Vernon bridge this week and did well on rubberlegs and various droppers.  Streamer fishing immediately below Chester dam has been good too with some nice fish being caught.

Today at Jimmy’s 3-6-13

Hey everybody, really quick I just wanted to let you know we received a big order from Montana Fly Company today with lots of cool new stuff. Everything from new hopper legs and some new water bottles and coffee mugs. SO if you get a minute come check it out!

Also a quick reminder that we will have a free tying demo this Saturday and Linda Windels will be the tier.

Linda grew up in a fishing family, but was not introduced to fly-fishing until 1993 while living in Golden, Colorado. There she took fly-fishing and tying lessons from a local shop. It was love at first sight. In 2001 she and husband Bill moved to Idaho Falls.  She had visited the area previously to fish the South Fork with Reel Women, then again with Joan Wulff and Lori Ann Murphy. So the 2001 move was to “fly-fishing heaven.”  She attended her first Eastern Idaho Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Expo (EIFTE) that year and learned more on fishing and tying than thought possible.  She marvels at attending EIFTE workshops from Wayne Luallen, Chris Helm, and Leslie Harrop. Those workshops and her natural abilities serve her well. She teaches fly tying in the EIFTE’s ladies program.  Her tying accomplishments are featured during EIFTE fly tying demos, and she is the subject of inquiries about taking part in fly tying events around the western states. Linda advocates that more women are needed in fly fishing and fly tying. She therefore organizes women’s fly fishing visit to destinations including the Big Hole Lodge in Montana and Falcon’s Ledge Lodge in Utah. Some participants have been doing so for as long as twenty years. Thus for any lady interested in fly tying, we highly recommend Linda’s demo.  But we also recommend her demo for any fly tier. Linda’s ability and generosity accompanied by her wit and knowledge will result in an excellent event.

Fishing report 2-15-2013

Hopefully all you guys out there have gotten out with this “warmer” weather we have had recently. We apologize for not updating the fishing report in such a long time, but there just has not been much going on. The Henry’s Fork and South Fork are fishing very well with the recent warmer weather. Nymph fishing continues to dominate, but if conditions are right fish can be had on top on small midge patterns. Jimmy has been having good luck with streamer patterns on sinking lines in the deep runs on the South Fork.

Springfield reservoir should be fishing well around the springs for those needing a stillwater fix. Fish at Springfield will respond to small (think size 16 and smaller) chironomid pupa and larvae patterns.

The Big Lost is fishing well on midge patterns and small nymphs.

It looks like things are steadily starting to get warmer so get out there and enjoy some good fishing and the small crowds! As always, if you guys have any questions about where to go and what to use stop in or give us a call.
