South Fork 06-23-15
The bugs are coming out! From about Byington down, Golden Stones and Salmon Flies are hatching with fish eating them. Although, I would take some big bugs with me from Cottonwood down. Also, Green Drakes and Sallies are leading the way up the canyon and are up to Cottonwood. They have been most productive in flats and rifles. Then as you continue further up the river, nymphing and streamer fishing has been good. Also having a few Pmds in that section.The flows have been stable at 14,000 cfs at Irwin allowing the bugs to keep moving up the River.
Fly selection from Cottonwood Down would consist of: Super Chernobyl Brown size 6 & 8, CFO Pink Flamer size 8, Jake’s Hot Cake Salmon Fly size 6, Green Drake CDC Thorax Dun size 10, CFO Sally X Stonefly size 14, Olive Hare’s Ear Parachute size 12, CW Pink Albert Dun size 16 and 18.
Fly selection from above Cottonwood would consist of: Kreelex Minnow Copper/Gold size 6, Sparkle Minnow Rainbow size 6, Bennet’s Seal Rubber Legs Black/Brown size 6 & 8, Psycho Prince Yellow size 16, Pearl Lightning Bug size 16.
South Fork 6-12-15
First off, the South Fork has been raised over 6000 Cfs at Irwin and same at Heise in the last four days. Thus, meaning that the gravel bars that were sitting out, will now be a riffle in most spots. The fish should now be sitting in more traditional riffles and in the side channels better then before. I would also not be afraid to fish the troughs and mid river riffles too. Additionally, I would also fish the banks with streamers as much as I could. Lastly, the dry flies have not appeared yet, and I would still wait another week or so to really start looking for big bugs on the lower South Fork. The flies that I would take with me on a trip to the South Fork would be a Bennet’s Seal Brown Rubber Leg size 6 and 8, Pearl Lightning Bug size 14, Psycho Prince Yellow size 14 for nymphs. Streamers would be Krafts Kreelex Minnow copper/gold size 6, Sculpin Sparkle Minnow size 4, and a Gallops Yellow Dungeon size 2. Just to be on the safe side I would take some Pmds such as CFO Morning Dun Spinner size 18, Harrop’s Eye CDC Para Dun Spinner size 18.
Henry’s Fork 6-06-15
By having the Henry’s Fork running at almost 500 cfs lower flow then normal for this time of year, the hatches are beginning to occur faster from Warm River and down. Pmd’s spinner falls in the morning have been quite successful from about 10 in the morning to about 1 in the after noon. Also, caddis have been prominent in mornings and evenings. Although now with the sighting of Green Drakes, I would make sure to have them along in my box. Additionally, I would also not be afraid to fish a dry dropper with a golden stone and a small nymph. Next, the dry flies I would take are Super Chernobyl Brown size 10, Improved X-Caddis Yellow size 14 and 16, Green Drake Wulff size 10, Harrop’s Rusty Biot Spinner size 16 and 18, and finally a Harrop’s CDC PMD Biot Spinner size 16 and 18. Then for nymphs I would use a Bennet’s Brown Rubber Leg size 8, Copper John Red size 16, and Uv2 Mayfly nymph size 16.
South Fork 7-07-14
First off, the South Fork is fishing great all throughout the river. The salmon flies are now all the way up to the Palisades Dam, but they are still in the canyon. When fishing the big bugs, I would stop on a gravel bar and fish the structures like log jams, big boulders, and troughs. Along with the big bugs are PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and a big Caddis towards night. If there is an overcast day, I would not be afraid to try a streamer. Therefore the selection of flies I would have, goes as such:
Trout Flies:
Super Chernobyl Golden Yellow (size 8 & 10)
CFO Pink Ant (size 8)
Improved Sofa Pillow (size 4)
Rollin Stone (size 4)
Small Dries:
Pink Comparadun (size 16 & 18)
Pink Albert CDC Biot Emerger (size 16 & 18)
Kyle’s Yellow Sally (size 12 & 14)
Goddard Caddis (size 14)
Nymphs:
Bennet’s Seal Rubber Legs (size 6 & 8)
Beadhead Crystal Pheasant Tail (size 14 & 16)
Red Copper John (size 14 & 16)

Gallop’s Olive or White Sex Dungen (size 2)

7-11-13 South Fork
Well the big Salmon Flies are almost finished up on the upper South Fork near the dam, but the fishing has still be excellent with a golden stone. On both the upper and lower stretch John’s CFO Yellow ant size 8 and Berrett’s Golden Stone barred legs size 8 have worked along the banks as a golden stone imitation. The riffles have also been good with a Pink Comparadun size 20 and 18 as PMD’s (Pale Morning Duns)and spinners along with Yellow Sally (Kyle’s Yellow Sally size 12) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. all throughout the South Fork. Also if you get an overcast day on the South Fork, I would try a streamer such as a Gallop Peanut Envy Olive size 2 or a Black Prince Bugger size 4 along the banks. Lastly, a Brown Rubber Leg size 6 and a Red Copper John size 16 can work as a nymph rig.
6-25-13 South Fork
Note: This post is in addition to an earlier post by Bruce so be sure to read his report also. Due to the low water level and warmer water temperatures in Palisades Reservoir the hatches are progressing fast so we thought an additional report was in order-Jimmy
The big bugs are here! The Salmon flies are the way up to Dry Creek in the Canyon. Use a Kingfisher Widow Maker size 4 and a CFO Flammer ant size 8 to imitate a Salmon fly and should be very productive in catching trout along the banks and any log jams. Along with the Salmon flies are Green drakes and PMDs in the riffles and using A Olive Hare’s Ear Parachute size 12 (Green Drake) and a Pink Comparadun size 16 (PMD) can allow a great riffle fishing on the South Fork.
From the Palisades dam down to Conant should have big bugs hatching any day. Nymph fishing up there has been excellent with a Brown Rubber Leg size 6 or 8 and a Red Copper John size 16. A few PMDs have been hatching up there also and if you see any fish rising I would use CFO Pink Albert spinner size 18. Lastly if all else fails on the upper stretch I would use Beadhead Crystal Pheasant tail size 14.
Henry’s Fork 6-17-13
To start, the fishing on the lower Henry’s fork has been consistent the last week and should stay that way for awhile. With a dry-dropper set up using a CFO Flammer Ant(golden stone imitation) size 8 as a dry and a Beadhead Crystal Pheasant tail size 16 can be rewarding all day long. Also fish a Green Drake Parachute size 10 from about mid-morning to mid-afternoon even if you don’t see any Green Drakes because the fish might be looking for them. The gray drakes are starting to appear in the evenings. Finally right at dark the trout will move off the bigger flies in favor of smaller caddis so try a size 16 or 18 tan x-caddis.
