The Snake River should now be considered a destination during through November.  With dropping flows and seasonal cooling fish are not only more active, but more approachable.  The river from Blackfoot to American Falls Reservoir is hosting record sized rainbows coming out of the reservoir.  Streamers, wooly bugger and San Juan types fished deeply as possible give the best chance to encounter them.   Within the next few days, if not already, the snowflake dun hatch will attract trout in the same reach of river.   Look for BWO activity throughout on overcast days, and terrestrial patterns will be effective for several weeks to come.   We have word of a 29-inch cutthroat being caught just below Am. With the Henry’s Fork fishing slow because of warm water the mainstem Snake River is a great alternative.  In the early  morning trico activty and well placed streamers are bringing action.  During evenings around and after  sunset streamers are the best way to encounter large trout.

Walk-in wade fishing opportunities are getting more numerous as the river is flowing at close to normal amounts.   Best fishing seems to be below Blackfoot, but evening streamers will produce just about anywhere.  This is also the time of year where ant flights attract fish, so be sure to carry various dry and wet ant patterns whenever you fish the river.

With flows a bit less than normal on most of the river, now is the time to consider walk-in wade fishing.  As on the South Fork, riffles are now great locations for dry fly action.  There are several locations along the river for trying these.   Get in touch with us for information on which seem to be worth trying.  Be sure to include streamer pattern in your fly box if you fish the river during evenings.

Below Blackfoot the river is at flows good for walk-in fishing as well as float fishing. Terrestrial patterns presented towards shaded banks during daytime will bring action.  So will streamers and caddis life cycle patterns during evening hours.  Above Blackfoot, float fishing is best, but use the same terrestrial and streamer pattern strategies.

Streamer patterns in the evening are your best bet to find action on the river.  Fish transitions and heads of runs and along banks.   If you try evening fishing here, be sure to carry caddisfly life cycle patterns as fish are rising to these.   During daytime slam hopper and chernobyl patterns against banks as you would do on the South Fork.

Even though the river is a bit higher than normal, fishing is really picking up here.  Whether you walk in or wade, terrestrial insects are becoming more important each day in trout diets.  Caddis, some PMDs and sallys are emerging.   But if you want chance at the rlly big fish this river offers, go to streamer, wooly bugger on San Juan worm types.  Have you heard of the new Idaho record rainbow ( 20 pounds and change) caught in the river below Tilden Bridge?  It was probably an American Falls Reservoir fish escaping the reservoir doldrums for moving and therefore more comfortable water.  True, it was caught on worms, but fly tying fly-fishers, being an innovative bunch, can surely come up with a worm cluster pattern.   Who knows: one such fly presented properly could come up with another Snake River trout of such proportions!

Getting better all the time, especially as flows drop and days shorten.   Its mostly streamer fishing, but terrestrials are now important if you fish banks and overhead cover.

Each day we go past mid summer this river becomes more attractive.  Right now there are many walk-in wade locations and float fishing is a great way to really see what this river offers.  Streamer fishing especially early and late in the day is the best way to encounter the large trout here.  But with the great and growing terrestrial insect populations, slamming hoppers towards banks and other overhead cover out of direct sunlight is productive.  Use your South Fork bank fishing techniques if you float fish this river.

The river is low enough, and therefore approachable, that evening streamer fishing can be an option. You can’t beat the mainstem Snake River for convenience.  There are numerous locations for walk-in wade fishing now that flows are dropping.  Get in touch with us to find the best at any given time.
