Sage has always been one of the go to rod companies for saltwater fly fishing and with their newest rod, the MOTIVE, that tradition continues. The MOTIVE is was introduced this last summer and provides fisherman with a high performance saltwater rod at a lower price then the popular XI3. Many of us do not get to fish saltwater as much as we would like so a rod like the MOTIVE makes more sense for people not wanting to break the bank. We have cast the 8 and 10wt rods in the store and they are awesome! To be honest, its tough to tell this rod apart from some of the higher end sticks. For those of you that don’t plan to be fishing saltwater anytime soon, this rod will be an excellent streamer rod! The MOTIVE is available in 8-12wt and retails for $425.00, you really can’t beat this rod in that price range. So, if you have some spare time, come down and check this rod out, you will be impressed!

Constructed of time-proven materials and embodying Sage’s immense saltwater experience, the MOTIVE features a powerful but smooth fast action that loads quickly to deliver heavy saltwater flies with the accuracy the sport demands. Light and responsive, you feel connected to your line for ultimate control over a full day of enjoyable casting. Yep, it’s safe to say the salt has attracted another convert.

I know most of you have probably finished up most of your Christmas shopping, but for those still looking for some good ideas we have an awesome new wading boot from Korker’s called the Devils Canyon, that would would fit the bill perfectly. The Devils Canyon uses the same Boa lace system that Korker’s is known for and is extremely light for such a feature packed boot. This boot does not have the traditional clunky styling that you typically have with wading boots, instead it has a more stream-lined hiking boot look to it. I would highly encourage anybody looking for a new pair of wading boots to come check out the Devils Canyon, I know I will be fishing in a pair next season!

South Fork General Winter Report 12-7-13

The South Fork is fishing really well right now and should continue to do so all through the winter when weather permits. We will continue to update the fishing report as things change but here is a good general report for the river in the coming months. The river is flowing 1,200 cfs out of the dam and that means there is great wade fishing access throughout the system. For now, you can still float but we recommend sticking to shorter floats to maximize your time out on the water. Both Nymphing and Streamer fishing have been producing well lately, with nymphing being your best option. As far as nymphing, egg patterns, zebra midges, small rubberlegs, and other small attractor nymphs are all good bets. For streamer fishing, small clouser minnows, sculpzillas, bellyache minnows, etc.. would all be good choices. As the river continues to cool down, try fishing streamer patterns in the deep, slow water of the river with a fast sinking sink tip or even a full sink line. Midges are about the only thing that can provide dry fly fishing this time of year, but sometimes the midge fishing can be spectacular. Make sure and have an assortment of small midge patterns both nymphs and dries whenever you head out this time of year.

As always, feel free to give us a call at the shop with any questions you may have!
