Because of increased flows out of Palisades Reservoir and the beginning of run-off the river flow is up from Menan to Blackfoot. Wading is still possible, but fishing has slowed a bit. Streamers are still the best bet. Look for flows to increase (because of downstream irrigation demands) making walk-in wade fishing tougher as we advance through the spring season.
Flows are up a bit, but not enough to influence trout activity. Likewise, some canals along the lower reaches are open meaning lower river flows for the time being. Streamers are your best choice to encounter big browns and ‘bows. Anywhere you can find access on the river from Menan to Tilden Bridge you will find action through using them. Flows are a bit below normal throughout the river, and access is excellent. Strongly consider fishing this very near-by easily reached fishery. Some very large browns and post spawning rainbows are being caught through use of streamers on a sink tip line. If you enjoy fishing light equipment, midge hatches are ongoing. Look for good fishing on the river until irrigation demands put big flows into the river. Come into the shop for access information and to see a selection of flies that work well on the river.
Throughout the river streamers are producing good action. Flows are below normal. Access is improving as snow and ice melt. From Firth to American Falls Reservoir the river is almost free of ice & snow, so this part of the river might be the best to visit to try your favorite streamer patterns. The main stem Snake River is open to fishing year round.
Streamers are the name of the game now with post spawning rainbows and hungry browns making for action. For top water enthusiasts, midge patterns offer action from smaller fish, and some BWOs are showing up on the lower reaches. With warming days access will become easier for both walk-in wading and float fishing.
Shore ice limits access on parts of the river, but there are some places where you get on to pitch a streamer or try some midging. Try below Gem Lake Dam. On the west side you can walk the rock ledges for access. On the east side there is some access below the undeveloped boat launch near the kid’s pond. There is also some access on the west side of the river downstream of the Shelley Interstate-15 connector. Further downstream, the river can be easily reached from the IDF&G Riverton Road access below Blackfoot, from the Tilden Bridge west side, and from McTucker Ponds.
Stays open year round. We will have occasional reports on it, but through the winter streamers, midge patterns, and small bead head nymphs will be best choices for action.
Flows on most of the river are somewhat higher than normal, but reports indicate that brown trout are responding well to streamer patterns.
Brown trout are migrating up & down the river. Streamer patterns are the best way to encounter them. Low light conditons are best times to be there.
Look for migrating browns taking streamer patterns almost anywhere up & down the river. The same for rainbows chasing forage minnows. This unsettled weather we are having is just the ticket for action with evenings being the best time of day for a chance at a really big brown or ‘bow. Be sure to have a streamer tip line for presenting those streamers.
