Still Waters 5-14-09

Right now  these are providing the best fishing in the region.   Chesterfield Res. is waking up.  We have reports of folks doing well along the south shoreline coves above the dam.  Leeches, prince nymphs, and midge pupa are beginning to bring action.  Daniels and Hawkins reservoirs are still producing well with flies described in the last few reports.  Springfield Res. is fishing best with midge pupa. Experiment to find the depths at which fish are feeding.   If the ” pupa below an indicator technique” does not produce, try putting one on an intermediate line, then troll it at VERY SLOW speed.

Has anyone tried the Harriman fsih Pond?

Henry’s Fork 5-14-09

It’s a bit early for big stoneflies to be moving. Give a week or so and the nymphs will begin showing up in good numbers along shorelines above the Chester backwaters.  We’ll place info here on the stonefly hatch progress as soon as we receive it.  Right now the river below Chester Dam-Fall River confluence is not good fishing because of Fall river’s run-off.  Upstream there is some discolor especially above Ashton Reservoir. Currently nymphing and presenting streamers is the best way to find action almost everywhere the river is open to fishing above Chester.

South Western Montana 5-14-09

Montana general fishing season opens this Saturday. The Madison River is fishing well from Hebgen Dam to the Cabin Creek confluence above Quake Lake for those fly fishers presenting nymphs and streamers. The Gallatin River is high and discolored.  The Beaverhead River will open Saturday for fishing from Clark Canyon Dam to Pipe Organ Bridge.  Look for streamers and nymphs to work well.

South Fork 5-14-09

Flow out of  Palisades has been ramped down to 12800 cfs and probably will stay around there for a while to balance with expected run-off inflow and fill the reservoir.  A flush to help manage cutthroat and rainbow downstream is possible late this month.  For now fishing the river channels in Swan Valley with large nymphs and streamers will be the best way to find action.   Run-off from tributaries below Swan Valley discolors the river making fishing success difficult.

Hebgen Lake is now mostly ice-free. Try woolly buggers and streamers around the north shoreline. The Madison River above Cabin Creek below Hebgen Dam is fishing well for those presenting nymphs or streamers. Clark Canyon reservoir is fishing well.  During mornings fish shorelines and in 5-10 feet of water. Use midge pupa patterns. Later in the day fish move to deeper water. When the lake becomes choppy because of wind, switch to streamers presented deep.

Small streams 5-11-09

Birch Creek remains the best place to try.  Wind will reduce the BWO & midge emergences, but small nymphs will always work especially when they are lifted through the water column in view of resident trout.

For now forget the river below the Fall River confluence-Chester Dam. The river above remains good fishing but is rising some because of run-off.  This week looks to be cool & windy, so run-off should not increase to make the river unfishable.   Streamers and nymphs presented on sink-tip lines will bring the best action.

South Fork 5-10-09

The South Fork flow remains at 16,700 cfs from the Palisades Dam. The water is a little off color from the tributaries and the high flows of the river. We advise that you do not float below the Byington boat ramp. The water is very high and off color. Madison County has widened the South Channel that leads to the Twin Bridges boat ramp making this boat ramp usable. Once again we do not advise floating this lower section of the river because of the flows. As they continue to pull more water off at the Great Feeder canal the flows  below Byington will drop to an acceptable level for floating.

Big nymphs fished deep will be your best sucess for catching fish. The water is still cold so look for those fish to be holding in deep slow water. Rubberlegs followed by a bead head dropper will work. Streamers presented slowly in those deep holes will also produce fish.

Today at Jimmy’s 5-7-09

Today at Jimmy’s we have watched the wind blow all day. It is supposed to subside tomorrow, lets hope that it does. This spring has been interesting, if the sun is shinning the wind has been blowing, otherwise it has been cold and raining or snowing. All of this means that we will have excellent water in August and September.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out our new online store we have some really good deals going on. The closeout section has a few different items with extremely good prices. You will not be able to find prices like this anywhere else. Take advantage of our closeout deals, they will not last long. We are continually working on the online store to grow our selection of merchandise. I will keep you all updated on the new additions to the store.

Don’t get to discouraged over the wind and the crappy spring weather. Salmon flies are on there way, It won’t be long now and we will all be casting huge sofa pillows to hungry trout along the banks.
