Rio has been making great fly lines for a long time and their new line promises to continue that tradition. We just received a few of the new “Perception” lines from Rio and they look awesome!  The new Perception is built with a super low stretch “ConnectCore” that improves sensitivity for better cast timing, easier line lift, and precise mending. The line also is Tri-colored to help with accuracy and distance control. Rio offers the line in weights 3-8 in a green/tamo/can color combination. We would be happy to show you these new lines in the shop so come down and check them out! With trout fishing taking center stage in the area, there aren’t many people who make it out after warmwater species throughout the summer. That is a mistake though, as this time of year can provide awesome fishing for bass, carp, and bluegill.

Bluegill fishing has been good on Preston area reservoirs when the weather cooperates. The wind from this past weekend made it tough to locate bluegill, but the fishing will be good again with consistent weather. The bluegill fishing has been weird so far this year, but I think the best is yet to come. If you make it out and find the bluegill all the traditional patterns like san juan worms, bluegill candy, bream poppers, and small beadhead nymphs will take fish.
Carp fishing has been red hot on Blackfoot Reservoir. We have heard more then a few reports this past week about excellent fishing in most any shallow bay with lots of smaller 5-12lb fish showing up with the occasional 20+lb big boy. I would make sure and have flies like Lukes carp candy and Dan’s crayfish up there with me.
Bass fishing remains good in the area for both Large and Smallmouth. This is peak time to hit Ririe Reservoir for smallmouth with small streamers and poppers. The American falls area continues to fish well, although I would start fishing a little bit deeper 5-12 ft of water with the warmer temps we have been experiencing. The largemouth fishing down around Preston has been great if you can get there early, and I don’t mean 8 or 9 o’clock early. I have been down Largemouth fishing quite a bit and once the sun comes up the quality bass really slow down and pull back into cover or move out deeper. If you can fish them when the sun isn’t on the water, it can be pretty good. Bigger crayfish and Clouser minnow type patterns is what I would be throwing for Largmouth and Smallies.

Stillwaters 6-18-13

Still Water

Area stillwaters are fishing well right now. We have heard good reports from Daniels, Chesterfield, Twenty Four Mile, and Springfield. Damsels are dominating right now and probably will until the lakes get too warm. The damsel hatch can be some of the best fishing of the year and can even provide you with some rare, dry fly action.  When fishing the damsel hatch though, you need to be ready to switch up your presentation. I would mix it up between throwing damsels on really slow sinking lines like the “Hover” line from Rio, put a pair of damsels patterns under an indicator, or fish a dry damsel with a dropper below. The fish seem to respond differently in each lake around the area so play around with it until you figure out the presentation they want. We have quite a few new damsel patterns in the shop that would be worth checking out if you haven’t been in to see them.

Yellowstone Park 6-18-13

We will be in Bechler Meadows tomorrow, so expect a report on the results of fishing the river. Right now run-off is leaving all Fall River Basin streams, so we will be looking for the emergence  sequence beginning with isoperla stoneflies, PMDs, green drakes and on to brown drakes.  The Ashton Forest Service Office tells us the Flagg Ranch Road is open at least to the Targhee, Bridger-Teton National Forest border at the far end of Grassy Lake.  Now it is possible to walk into Beula Lake to enjoy cutts responding to damselflies.

Henry’s Fork 6-18-13

Now is a good time to go back to the Cardiac Canyon reach with dry golden and giant stonefly patterns. The giants and golden hatches went through big time a few weeks ago, and fish have had a chance to digest those eaten.  Fish remain conditioned to look for these, so a good strategy for such as Hatchery Ford, around the Mesa Falls area, and Bear Gulch is to present them.  You may not get into quite as many fish as during the peak of these hatches, but you will surely have good results.  Cardiac Canyon keeps you away from crowds on the Harriman-Last Chance reach above looking for responses to green drakes, caddisflies, and PMDs and from the crowds on the river below responding to the gray drake hatch.  Speaking of green drakes, they’re ramping down on the lower river and yet to make  a major appearance in the Last Chance-Harriman part of the river.

We are getting a lot of calls about the South fork in the anticipation of an early stone fly emergence. As of yesterday there was no sign of a nymph crawl out. We floated from Byington down and know of a couple of boats that were below us and no one saw any of the big bugs. We did have a good hatch of size 10 green drakes from late morning to early afternoon and the small fish were up feeding on them in the riffles.

Our best success still came underneath with size 4 rubber legs followed with a smaller nymph.  Streamers have also been good. The same goes for the upper sections as far as patterns and techniques go..  We are getting a lot questions also about the obstacles in the river below Byington. There is a pretty good suck hole on the north Twin Bridges and a lot of debris is piled up on Lorenzo bridge. Passage under the bridge is down the middle or through the right channel. The ramp at Lorenzo will fit two boats but not three. You can pull over on either side of the river directly blow the bridge to see if the ramp is clear before proceeding to the take out.

Henry’s Fork 6-17-13

To start, the fishing on the lower Henry’s fork has been consistent the last week and should stay that way for awhile. With a dry-dropper set up using a CFO Flammer Ant(golden stone imitation) size 8 as a dry and a Beadhead Crystal Pheasant tail size 16 can be rewarding all day long. Also fish a Green Drake Parachute size 10 from about mid-morning to mid-afternoon even if you don’t see any Green Drakes because the fish might be looking for them. The gray  drakes are starting to appear in the evenings. Finally right at dark the trout will move off the bigger flies in favor of smaller caddis so try a  size 16 or 18 tan x-caddis.

Small Streams 6-15-13

Big fish are where you find them.  We have a report (pictures and all) of a 27-inch brown coming out of the Portneuf River above Lava Hot Springs. Here are a few other small streams that hold big browns: Robinson Creek,  Camas Creek, South Fork of the Madison River (Montana), Duck Creek, Grayling Creek, and Gibbon River (Yellowstone Park), Warm River, Stump Creek and Crow Creek ( all in season), lower Grey’s River (Wyoming).  The same could be said for Willow Creek, Cranes Creek, and Gray’s Lake Outlet up until the early 1990s when drought and other actions diminished them. There may be a few left in these waters, but nothing like in years gone by.

Southwest Montana 6-15-13

Fishing Reports, South Western Montana

Fishing on the Madison River below Hebgen Lake is really shaping up. Big stoneflies are beginning to hatch early, caddisflies are giving great PM fishing and PMDs are emerging big time.  Streamers are working during low light conditions. And because  insect activity is beginning earlier than normal, crowds are down.
