Sage has always been one of the go to rod companies for saltwater fly fishing and with their newest rod, the MOTIVE, that tradition continues. The MOTIVE is was introduced this last summer and provides fisherman with a high performance saltwater rod at a lower price then the popular XI3. Many of us do not get to fish saltwater as much as we would like so a rod like the MOTIVE makes more sense for people not wanting to break the bank. We have cast the 8 and 10wt rods in the store and they are awesome! To be honest, its tough to tell this rod apart from some of the higher end sticks. For those of you that don’t plan to be fishing saltwater anytime soon, this rod will be an excellent streamer rod! The MOTIVE is available in 8-12wt and retails for $425.00, you really can’t beat this rod in that price range. So, if you have some spare time, come down and check this rod out, you will be impressed!

The all-new MOTIVE saltwater rods are ideal for seasoned saltwater fans looking to complement their rod arsenal, and fly fishers new to the salt who want to experience the many hard-fighting species without breaking the bank. Constructed of time-proven materials and embodying Sage’s immense saltwater experience, the MOTIVE features a powerful but smooth fast action that loads quickly to deliver heavy saltwater flies with the accuracy the sport demands. Light and responsive, you feel connected to your line for ultimate control over a full day of enjoyable casting. Yep, it’s safe to say the salt has attracted another convert.

Today at Jimmy’s 12/15/13

I know most of you have probably finished up most of your Christmas shopping, but for those still looking for some good ideas we have an awesome new wading boot from Korker’s called the Devils Canyon, that would would fit the bill perfectly. The Devils Canyon uses the same Boa lace system that Korker’s is known for and is extremely light for such a feature packed boot. This boot does not have the traditional clunky styling that you typically have with wading boots, instead it has a more stream-lined hiking boot look to it. I would highly encourage anybody looking for a new pair of wading boots to come check out the Devils Canyon, I know I will be fishing in a pair next season!

South Fork General Winter Report 12-7-13

The South Fork is fishing really well right now and should continue to do so all through the winter when weather permits. We will continue to update the fishing report as things change but here is a good general report for the river in the coming months. The river is flowing 1,200 cfs out of the dam and that means there is great wade fishing access throughout the system. For now, you can still float but we recommend sticking to shorter floats to maximize your time out on the water. Both Nymphing and Streamer fishing have been producing well lately, with nymphing being your best option. As far as nymphing, egg patterns, zebra midges, small rubberlegs, and other small attractor nymphs are all good bets. For streamer fishing, small clouser minnows, sculpzillas, bellyache minnows, etc.. would all be good choices. As the river continues to cool down, try fishing streamer patterns in the deep, slow water of the river with a fast sinking sink tip or even a full sink line. Midges are about the only thing that can provide dry fly fishing this time of year, but sometimes the midge fishing can be spectacular. Make sure and have an assortment of small midge patterns both nymphs and dries whenever you head out this time of year.

As always, feel free to give us a call at the shop with any questions you may have!

Todat at Jimmy’s 11-25-13

Hey everybody, it has been a while since today at Jimmy’s has been updated, but with things starting back up in the shop look for a lot more updates on this page. First off for those who don’t know, we have started our free fly tying demonstrations that will be held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dave Brackett tied this past week and did an awesome job, this week we have Dennie Edwards tying who is back by popular demand. Dennie ties some great flies so be sure to come check him out this Saturday.

Second, we are starting to see some new product trickle in from various manufacturers and there is some seriously good stuff showing up. Today I wanted to highlight a new product from Simms. The new shirt is the GT Tri-comp long sleeve fishing shirt. This is a HI-Tech shirt and Simms has pulled out all the stops on this piece. The Gt top perfectly blends the traditional button up fishing shirt with the newer performance fishing shirts and manages to make it look good in the process. This will be THE shirt for summer fishing or any saltwater destination trip you may be planning to get you through the winter. This shirt caught our eye at the IFTD in Las Vegas this year and even brought home a few awards from the show. Here is a little more information on this great new shirt by Simms

Stillwater 10-22-13

Now is the time to get out and enjoy our local lakes and reservoirs before most of the m freeze up for the winter. We have had good reports from Henry’s Lake, Island Park, Daniels, Springfield, and some okay reports from Chesterfield. Of all the lakes Daniels and Springfield are providing the most action. Springfield has been stocked with its annual fall batch of fish and people are having success fishing with dark leech patterns on full sinking lines or small chironomids under indicators. Daniels has been fishing very well with chrionomid pupa under indicators in water from 5-12ft deep. Most of the fish at both locations are under 20″ but a fair number of larger fish have been taken out of both recently. Henry’s Lake continues to produce when the weather is nice enough to fish (like this week!). People have been having better success in deeper water 8-12 as opposed to the shallow water traditionally fished this time of year. Fly choice doesn’t seem to be terribly important but experiment with different sizes and colors of leech/scud patterns until you find what is working best. In the deeper water you need to fish a full sinking line to get you down where the fish are. Of all the area reservoirs, Chesterfield seems to be fishing a little slower then the others. The water is slightly discolored, but fishable. There aren’t a lot of fish being caught, but the fish being caught have been nice.

The big freeze is coming but until it does, area stillwaters will continue to fish good. Contact us at the shop with any questions you might have and we can get you squared away!

South Fork 10/21/2013

The South Fork is fishing very well right now. With the cooler temperatures the fish are very active and with the flows around 1880cfs, the river is very accessible. On overcast days the streamer fishing has been great. Patterns like the sculpzilla and Galloup’s Peanut Envy in black have been the most productive. On the overcast days, the Blue winged olives have been hatching and providing some great late season dry fly fishing. Various BWO patterns have been producing, come down to the shop and we can get you squared away with the patterns you will want to have. If you happen to get out on a sunny day, the nymph fishing has been really good with a small rubberlegs and dropper like a zebra midge, san juan worm, or egg pattern. Be sure you are getting your nymphs right along the bottom! Streamer fishing has been okay on the sunny days, but it usually doesn’t turn on until later in the afternoon.

This is a great time of year to fish the river! As always, if you need any help with access points, flies, etc…. give us a call or stop in at the shop and we will get you set up!

Henry’s Fork 10-18-13

The Henry’s Fork is fishing really good right now. The entire lower river below Ashton has been producing well with nymph rigs, streamers, and BWO’s on overcast days. Nymph wise throw a rubberlegs and smaller bead-head dropper. It is getting to be the time of year when egg patterns work very well too. Streamer fishing has been great and the pattern doesn’t seem to matter too much, but flies like the sculpzilla and Kelly Galloups Peanut Envy have worked particularly well. For those wanting to float, stretches like Ora to Vernon or Ora to Chester have been popular, but wade fishing has been just as productive. The weather for the weekend looks great, so get out there and enjoy some of the best fishing of the year!

Warmwater 9/16/13

I apologize for not updating the warmwater section of the fishing reports for a while now, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of information to pass on.

Ririe Reservoir has fished well for Smallmouth all summer and should only get better as we get some cooler weather. There are lots of small fish being caught shallow, but few larger fish. Those large fish seem to be out in water over 10ft deep. Down around Preston, many of the lakes have been drawn down pretty low this year and this has kept a lot of people from fishing. The weed growth has made things tough, but for those willing to do a little searching, there are still plenty of nice bass to be had. Fishing baitfish patterns on sinking lines has been good, as well as poppers for small fish. All Preston area lakes should really improve with the cooler weather we have coming.

Carp fishing has been hit or miss all summer for people. Blackfoot Reservoir has been either really good, or really bad, with the same thing going on down on the lower snake too. When the carp are in, the same techniques that work all spring have been effective. If the carp are not in, or not feeding, it has made for some really tough fishing.

We have not heard many panfish reports this summer in the shop, but that doesn’t mean anything. As things cool off and water levels start to come back the panfishing down around Preston can be really good. With all the lakes relatively close to each other, its fun to take a full day and fish two or three different reservoirs and try and get on the fish.

Warmwater fish do not get a whole lot of attention in the area come fall. People are hunting, Steelhead fishing, fishing streamers, etc… but they are missing out on some of the best warmwater fishing of the year. Give us a call at the shop if you have any questions at all.
