Today at Jimmy’s 2-15-2013

Hey guys couple things going on this week in the shop. First off, tomorrow (Saturday the 16th) we have Greg Schoby in doing a  free tying demo in the morning from 10a.m. to 1p.m. Greg is a fisheries biologist for the Fish and Game and will have some great patterns and  stories to share with you all so be sure to come check it out!

Second, we are now a HATCH reels dealer! In the shop we have a 5 plus, 7plus, and 9plus reel. The 5plus handles line weights from 5-7, the 7plus handles lines 7-9, and the 9plus can hold 9-12wt lines . If there is a size or finish you want from Hatch that we don’t have in the shop we can certainly get it in for you.  I have personally used these reels quite a bit over the last few months and I am very impressed. They have handled everything from trout to sharks for me and have performed flawlessly. I would highly recommend these reels to anybody wanting a bombproof high performing reel. Head on over to their website (www.hatchoutdoors.com) and check out the different sizes/finishes and be sure to read about the drag system, pretty cool stuff!

Today at Jimmys 1-2-12

I was fortunate enough to do a little saltwater fishing over the Christmas break down in California and had a blast. My family goes down to California quite a bit and My favorite thing to do is fly fish for sharks out of San Diego. In the summer months you are fishing for Mako and Blue Sharks. The Makos are nuts, they can easily get 10-15′ out of the water on their jumps. My First trip was in September 2010 when we hooked, leadered, and released a monster Mako  around 12 feet long and around 1,000lbs on a sage Xi3 16wt. Check out the video link below, make sure you watch the whole thing!

Needless to say after that trip I was obsessed and I try to get after them a few times each year. Our most recent trip was on 12/21/12 and yes I did plan to be shark fishing when the Mayans said the world would end! In the winter you are targeting Blue Sharks as the Makos leave looking for warmer water. We had a great trip, it took a while before any sharks showed up in the slick, but once they did we were mugged. There were times when we had 4 sharks around the boat at the same time looking for something to munch on. I took a bunch of video of the day that you can watch by copying and pasting the link below.

I had a blast and I will be down there again for sure this summer!

Fishing Report 1/2/12

It is Cold!!! With all this cold weather, it is making fishing pretty tough. There is warmer weather in the forecast though, and with that better fishing will follow. Once things do warm up, nymphing area rivers with zebra midges, small pheasant tails, and your other favorite nymphs will be most productive. Springfield Reservoir should start fishing better too once things warm up. There, very small midges under an indicator will be your best bet.

Henry’s Lake 7-31-10

Fishing on Henry’s Lake continues to be spotty. If you really know the lake you can still get into some decent fishing. Areas such as Targhee Creek and around Duck Creek have been good areas to try. Creek mouths all around the lake should begin to turn on as we move into August. Traditional patterns like the electric black, peacock ah, and various scud patterns are going to be your best bet. Fishing has been spotty, if you wait to hear a good report to go up, chances are your going to be too late. August can be a good month to fish Henry’s so get up there when you get a chance.

Still Water 7-23-10

As its been mentioned in several previous posts, Chesterfield Reservoir continues to fish very well. The water is getting a little warm with the weather we have had recently, but it really is not  affecting the fishing too much. Intermediate lines and fishing under an indicator are going to be your best bet.  I fished it on both Tuesday 7-20 and Thursday 7-22 and had really good fishing using Damsel nymphs, darker Chironomids, and Callibaetis nymphs.  Stop in at the shop and we can hook you up with patterns and anything else you will need to be successful. Don’t pass up on this opportunity to get into some great fishing for BIG fish!

Still Water 7/16

Fishing on Chesterfield continues to be VERY good. Yesterday 7-15 was an unreal day of fishing, get up there while its hot!  There are some huge fish in the reservoir and your almost certainly guaranteed an aerial display.  The fish are hitting a variety of flies including leeches, damsels, chironomids, snails, you name it. Concentrate on fishing the before mentioned bugs on floating or intermediate sinking lines. The fish are up in the water column so a fast sinking line isn’t necessary.

One thing about Stillwater, change your presentation frequently! Very rarely can you catch fish on one presentation all day. The fish are constantly moving, especially in lakes, so you need to move as well. Sinking lines early and indicators later in the day is a good regime to follow.

Still Waters 7-10-10

If you want some big, crazy hard fighting rainbows you may want to head down to Chesterfield Reservoir. Fishing at Chesterfield has been red hot! I fished it yesterday 7/9 and did really well using a variety of techniques. There are so many different ways to catch fish out of Chesterfield. From midging under an indicator to sight casting to cruising fish and everything in between, its all been producing. Floating lines and full sinking lines ranging from an intermediate to a type 3 will cover all circumstances you will encounter on the reservoir. If you haven’t ever given still waters a try, give it a shot. Stop in at the shop and we can hook you up with all the information and fly patterns you will need to be successful.
