Fishing has been good to great depending where you are on the lake.  Earlier this week we fished the shallows at the timbered shoreline just north of Pintail Point.  Schools of cutts were moving around and provided great action.  We also hooked up a few brookies.  To do all this we used intermediate lines to present bead head peacock leeches and bead head brown mohair leeches, both in sizes 6-10.   Good action from brookies can be found in front of creek mouths all around the lake, cutts are everywhere, and as we said in the last report, hybrids are where you find them.  Good action continues along the west shoreline, in front of the cliffs and from the hatchery to Wild Rose.   With some stormy weather moving in look for the great fishing to continue if you bundle up and stay dry.

Too bad we all can’t fish like Tim in the company of the IDF&G shocking crew!   But they are sampling the fish population to get info for maintaining the great South Fork fishing we enjoy so much.   Right now flow out of Palisades Dam is around 3200 cfs with flow at Heise around 3400 cfs.  Walk in-wade fishing is at its best this time of year with so many accessible spots up and down the river.    We can help you find some of the best–so c’mon in and talk to us. With some stormy weather coming up look for BWO activity to provide some great action during the next week.   Thanks to lower flows your choice of riffles is never ending.   Streamer fishing is now at its peak and definitely the way to encounter those big browns.  Use streamers in darker colors and others in lighter colors (yellow or chartreuse seem very effective in attracting browns) and a sink tip line.  Choose low light conditions, and with stormy conditions even daytime can be a good time for streamers.

South Fork 10/20

Had the best day of fishing yesterday in my life! We caught around 500 fish. I used a great fly called the Electric Copper Bob, Fish can’t help but swim to this fly.  My arms are sore from catching fish. Every fish was measured and recorded that we caught, thanks to Brett High for such a great day!

Disclaimer: Due to the amount of phone calls we have received about the Electric Copper Bob, I need to inform you that this fly is best fished with a generator and 1/2″ Round Steel Cable for tippet. Its also a good idea to go with the Idaho Fish and Game so you don’t end up in jail.

Flows have dropped to 4,000cfs. Fishing remains the same as last week. Check our earlier reports for in depth fishing. A whole lot of Blue Wings and Nymphing. Waiting for some colder weather to turn on the streamer fishing.

Small Streams 10-15-10

Small Streams

Flow in lower Blackfoot River is at normal levels for this time of year.   Expect good wet fly fishing throughout.  The river below Warm River Spring  has a great BWO hatch and a few October caddis.  Streamers are effective on the lower Teton River.  Action on many smaller waters is slowing down as base flow levels are approached and insect activity slows.  Birch Creek in the family area is an exception with ongoing BWO & midge hatches and a few October caddis.

Still Water

Water is low just about everywhere.  Chesterfield Reservoir is producing big fish for those fishing deep.  Top end of Daniels Reservoir is out of the water, but presenting midge pupa under an indicator is effective.  Twenty-Four Mile Reservoir is very low making launching  boats a bit of a challenge.   Springfield Reservoir remains on the slow side, but look for improvements as we get cooler temps.

It’s brown trout time everywhere they are found. So streamer fishing is the way to go for best action.  Exception is the Firehole River where good surface action comes from BWOs, a few October caddis and midges.

River below Mackay Dam is very (155 cfs) low so fish are concentrated in deeper holes and runs.  Surface fishing is to BWO and midge hatches which seem to be plentiful.

It is time to use streamers here and will remain that way for months  to come. Evenings and early AMs will be the best time to be on the river. Have light colored and dark colored streamers in your fly box, a sink tip line, and stout leader on your reel.  With the river dropping walk in locations are plentiful. Come into the shop to learn the best of these.  Also, we can advise which sections to float at a given time.

Fish are in shallow water all around the lake.   You can have success wading at the State Park, around the hatchery, Wild Rose, and anywhere where you can find a solid bottom.   If you are boating, fish water less than six feet deep.  The cutts are tending to run in schools, so expect action for a while, then a period of nothing followed by alternating action and nothing.   Brookies seem to be concentrated around the state park-Howard Creek, Targhee Creek, west shoreline, and the hatchery.  Hybrids are were you find them.  All this moving to the shallows seems a bit strange because water temps in the lake remain around the lower fifties in Deg. F.    Makes us wonder how much better fishing will become when water temps drop into the forties in Deg. F.   Patterns proving very effective when presented on an intermediate line are bead head peacock leech, brown mohair leech with bead, and small soft hackled streamers.
