Water is still quite warm for the time of the season, but unsettled weather later this week will help the cooling process which is needed to get trout to distribute around the lake. Creek mouths still offer some of the best fishing

Perhaps the best news concerning Henry’s Lake is the recent purchase of 634 acres of land platted for subdivision, including some along Howard Creek by the Beartooth Group and the Nature Conservancy. This action will prevent loss of some critical wildlife habitat, wildlife migration corridors, and alteration of Howard Creek an important cutthroat trout spawning tributary for Henry’s Lake. Details of this action can be viewed on The Nature Conservancy’s web site Idaho page.

The cooling weather with early morning air temperatures beginning to drop below freezing is just what is needed to bring fish out of the depths to distribute around the lake. Weeds are beginning to break up, the lake is at about 80% of capacity, and out flow has been cut back to around 25 cfs.

Best fishing remains reduced to creek mouths and around submerged springs. Be at such locations as in front of Duck, Hope, Howard and Targhee Creeks at first light, and expect company. Same with in front of Staley Springs. Decreasing daylight hours and the sun tracking lower in the sky means the lake will begin to cool and fish will soon begin distributing around it.

Creek mouths and springs are the only good places for action these days. That means there will be plenty of other Henry’s Lake fishing enthusiasts at these locations.

Fisheries managers and much experienced Henry’s Lake anglers tell us that Utah chubs have resided in Henry’s Lake for a long time. They were discovered there years ago. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has completed some research on the interaction of these undesirable species on resident cutthroat trout and published the results which are fascinating. The best locations for now and well into the future will be creek mouths and submerged springs. Standard Henry’s Lake patterns apply. With respect to creek mouths, expect plenty of company at the more popular places (Howard, Hope/Duck, Targhee), and the same for around Staley Springs. Consider getting to these locations at first light.
