Big Lost River 5-10-16
Flow out of Mackay Dam has gone from about 130 cfs to a bit over 500 cfs in the last few days. Forget about safe wading and good BWO-midge hatches for a while.

Flow out of Palisades Dam has been around 11700 cfs for the last several days. About the only activity we have heard of is streamers being effective for catching rainbows below the dam where rainbows are in a spawning mode. Native cutthroat will thank you for presenting streamers and then removing any responding rainbows from the river!
We received an email on Friday that there is a tree across the middle channel just above twin bridges. It is about 1000 yards above the twin bridges highway. If you get out at the twin bridges boat dock, plan on dragging your boat around the log.

There are four USGS flow stations on the Henry’s Fork. The gage at each one indicates lower than normal flow, most of which readings seem significant. Is this a reason for aquatic insect hatches to be inconsistent so far this season? Hmmmm.
Still water fishing pressure will really increase as we warm up this month. In preparation for this IDF&G has released their stocking plan for the region. Here are some highlights from it with respect to numbers of rainbow trout to be released sometime this month.
Ashton Reservoir 1300, Blue Creek Reservoir 2000, Harriman Fish Pond (dam has been repaired, so isn’t dry anymore!) 1500, Horseshoe Lake 1500, Island Park Reservoir 2400, Mackay Reservoir 4200, Ririe Reservoir 6700, Sand Creek #1 3500, Sand Creek #4 1500, Teardrop Lake 800, and Jim Moore Pond (Roberts Gravel Pond) with 1800 tiger trout.
View the entire plan on the IDF&G’s web site Upper Snake Region page.
Flow out of Palisades Dam leveled off at just under 10000 cfs a few days ago. At Heise flow is 10600 cfs. Might be time to begin pitching rubber leg and yuck bug patterns with flows stabilized for a while.
We have more reports about good fishing between Hebgen and Quake Lakes. This time it is from folks using streamer patterns. Fishing should be good there until tributaries draining high country pour discolored water into the river.
Are you a drift boater? try the Warm River to Ashton or Ora Bridge to Chester stretch. It’s time to begin using big stonefly nymph patterns when you do. If you are wading the river, please take a look at our last entry for the Henry’s Fork. Some important info on public access is on it if you have not seen it.
Flow out of Palisades Dam still going up. It’s now at 10000 cfs. Rainbows are spawning in river, and pitching streamer patterns, glo-bugs, and San Juan worms will attract the more aggressive ones.
2016 Yellowstone Park Fishing Licenses are in the shop. Fishing season there opens Memorial Day weekend, so there is plenty of time to come in & pick up yours!
We have word that the Madison River between Quake and Hebgen Lakes is currently a great place for nymphing, and that the river around Reynolds Junction is producing in the same manner. So if the South Fork and the Henry’s Fork are not to your present liking, here is an alternative.
