Still Water 11-05-10

Some great fishing is to be had on Chesterfield, Daniels and Hawkins reservoirs.  Big fish have moved into shallows in each, so intermediate lines and leech patterns in fall colors are the way to fish.  Best fishing on Daniels seems late and early in the day. Fish in front of the dam at Hawkins. Any time seems to work on Chesterfield.  Springfield had been planted three times by mid October, but hold-overs are running to the mid-twenty inch range. All you have to do to encounter one is get past the planters.  Sand Creek ponds remain fishable, but action seems a bit slow with fall color leech patterns. Midge pupa patterns under a strike indicator will work on all these when you find the taking depth.

Small Streams 11-05-10

Many of these are shutting down for the upcoming winter season.  With stormy conditions roads to many will be tough, but some remain fishable. Birch Creek and the lower Teton  and Blackfoot rivers to name a few.  Streamer patterns would be best on the lower Teton and the lower Blackfoot.   Birch Creek’s BWO hatch will go on for a while and midges will continue through the winter.

Big Lost River 11-05-10

Because of overhead cover from cottonwoods, BWO emergences go on even on sunny days. Midges emerge all day here. With flows out of Mackay Dam around 100 cfs, walk-in wade fishing is great.  So get out and enjoy this great little river before winter sets in.

Henry’s Fork 11-05-10

As with the South Fork and main stem Snake River flows are down, so wading is a great  way to approach the river.  Best streamer fishing on the upper river is in Box Canyon where big bows are moving in for the winter.  On the lower river browns are moving throughout. Low water means they will be concentrated during daytime, but migrating during low light conditions.  Next week with a change in the weather for the worse coming will be a great time to encounter them.  The change will also mean good BWO activity. So take your pick for next week: BWO life cycle patterns or streamers!

Main Stem Snake River 11-5-10

Flows have dropped to normal levels, meaning that as with the South Fork much of the river is in great shape for walk-in wading.  It is time to use streamer patterns, and with a change in the weather coming big browns will be on the move.  Best times will be evenings and early AMs.  But with cloudy and stormy conditions predicted for much of next week, any time will provide a chance for that big guy to respond. Remember that a streamer featuring yellow or chartreuse will seem particularly effective and that sink tip lines and stout leaders will be the best tackle to use.

Henry’s Lake 11-5-10

Right now Henry’s Lake is the star of eastern Idaho’s fishing show.   Go there and you will have your chances for beautiful cutts and brookies and hard fighting hybrids.  Here’s some “where and how”  information.  Water temps are in the mid forties. Fish are in shallow water all around the lake. That means use either an intermediate  or slow sinking line. Use a stout leader(1x or 2x) with either. Effective flies to our knowledge include brown or purple Canadian mohair leeches (with bead), bead head peacock leech, California leech, and halloween, all in sizes 6-10. We have all these in stock.  Locations you ask? Hybrids seem scattered around the lake.  Lots of cutts and brookies are cruising along the shoreline within easy casting reach at the State Park, but a lot of folks are there.  From here walk over to Howard Creek where fish are fewer, but so are anglers.  It is very easy to launch a float tube or pontoon boat at the State Park to get out in the lake a few hundred feet and have great fishing back toward the shoreline.  Anywhere along the north shore you will find good numbers of cutts and brookies cruising.  The hatchery makes for good access for either wading or launching a float tube or pontoon boat.  So does the pull-out at the northwest corner of the lake above Pintail Point.  Wade the shallows in front of the tree line on the north shore.  Fish are also present in shallows along the west shore line and in front of the cliffs but boating is the best way to fish.  For the next day or two weather looks fantastic at the lake.   Next week will be a different story, so plan for wind, squalls and cold air temps then.

Still Waters 10-27-10

Good fishing is going on at Chesterfield, Daniels, Springfield reservoirs and Sand Creek Ponds.  Try small leech patterns in fall colors and damselfly nymph patterns. Midge pupa patterns under an indicator is the productive alternative.

Yellowstone Park 10-27-10

Had a great day fishing the Beaver Meadows reach of the Madison River yesterday. Snow squalls, day long ice in the guides, and wind did not keep the run-up browns and bows from hitting streamer patterns presented in deeper runs. This is the story on all Park waters hosting browns: streamers are going to bring action.  Be prepared for wintry conditions and slick or snow packed roads when you venture into the Park.  Sadly only several days remain for fishing Park waters. Fishing season here closes on November 7th.

Small Streams 10-27-10

Many of these have shut down because aquatic insects are packing it in for the winter, fish have migrated down to larger waters that offer more cover,  and certain roads are not maintained once winter sets in.  Candidates to try include the lower Blackfoot and lower Teton rivers and Birch Creek and Warm River (watch road conditions)below Warm River Spring. Water is low on the Blackfoot and Teton.  Streamers are working well on both rivers, while traditional attractors in small sizes and BWO life cycle patterns work well on Birch Creek and Warm River.

Big Lost River 10-27-10

Flows out of Mackay Dam are at 100 cfs meaning good wading conditions. Midges and BWOs provide good surface action. Small bead head nymphs, your pattern choice, work  well for wet fly fishing.  Check road reports  if stormy weather is coming on.
