The Birch Creek family area is the place to fish for now. The creek below Lone Pine opens this weekend and will be a destination for anglers of all kinds of terminal gear.   In other words it will be crowded.  Inflow from the mainstem Snake River makes most of McTucker Creek unfishable.   Run-off will impact many small waters this coming weekend, but some of these will be good locations for opening weekend.   Look for Warm River, Buffalo River, Tom’s Creek, and Portneuf River to be good choices.

Good news here is that the ice appears to be leaving Henry’s Lake.  That means it should be ready for fishing this upcoming weekend.  In southeast Idaho, Daniels and Hawkins reservoirs remain the stars of the show.  Water is clear in both with shallows and bays the best locations for action on leech and woolly bugger and midge pupa patterns.  The few folks we have talked to about fishing Chesterfield Reservoir say fishing is good  on leech patterns presented around coves and bays.  Springfield is producing for those using midge patterns, especially red zebra and other midge emerger patterns.  Ice is off both Devil Creek and Deep Creek reservoirs, and they are producing for those presenting small leech patterns.  If you are looking for bass, try American Falls Reservoir at Sportsman’s Park.

Flow out of Palisades Dam will remain fairly steady at around 12000-13000 cfs for the near future.  Fishing in the upper Swan Valley section of the river has been fairly good for those presenting rubber leg patterns, beadhead nymphs, and streamers on sink tip lines.  Side channels produce the best action.  Try those around Fall Creek Campground.  Below where run-off from tribs accumulates the river is colder and fishing slows.  With warming weather look for runoff to continue here for a while.  We’ll post more info on fishing the South Fork before Memorial Day weekend.

Henry’s Fork 5-18-09

Fall River has gone up to around 2500 cfs and likely will go higher today.  This means the Henry’s Fork below Chester Dam is not the place to fish for now because of high, cold, and roily water.  Now for the river above.  Flows below the Ashton Dam are stable but a bit higher than normal.  Above Ashton Reservoir some run-off is coming in from Robinson Creek.  We tried the river just below Vernon Bridge (second bridge below Ashton Dam) Saturday.  San Juan worms and big rubber legs worked well when fished deep.  We DID NOT see giant stonefly nymphs along stream edges.  Most likely that should begin in significant numbers late this week.  Nevertheless, because we did well on the big rubberlegs patterns there must be some nymphs available to fish in deeper water.  We’ll pass on any more info we have on the Henry’s Fork stonefly emergence before Memorial Day weekend.

Does not open until Memorial Day weekend.  Look for high water to prevail when it does.  Remember we are a  Yellowstone Park fishing permit vendor, and we will have those permits in time for the season opener there.

Still Waters 5-14-09

Right now  these are providing the best fishing in the region.   Chesterfield Res. is waking up.  We have reports of folks doing well along the south shoreline coves above the dam.  Leeches, prince nymphs, and midge pupa are beginning to bring action.  Daniels and Hawkins reservoirs are still producing well with flies described in the last few reports.  Springfield Res. is fishing best with midge pupa. Experiment to find the depths at which fish are feeding.   If the ” pupa below an indicator technique” does not produce, try putting one on an intermediate line, then troll it at VERY SLOW speed.

Has anyone tried the Harriman fsih Pond?

Henry’s Fork 5-14-09

It’s a bit early for big stoneflies to be moving. Give a week or so and the nymphs will begin showing up in good numbers along shorelines above the Chester backwaters.  We’ll place info here on the stonefly hatch progress as soon as we receive it.  Right now the river below Chester Dam-Fall River confluence is not good fishing because of Fall river’s run-off.  Upstream there is some discolor especially above Ashton Reservoir. Currently nymphing and presenting streamers is the best way to find action almost everywhere the river is open to fishing above Chester.

Montana general fishing season opens this Saturday. The Madison River is fishing well from Hebgen Dam to the Cabin Creek confluence above Quake Lake for those fly fishers presenting nymphs and streamers. The Gallatin River is high and discolored.  The Beaverhead River will open Saturday for fishing from Clark Canyon Dam to Pipe Organ Bridge.  Look for streamers and nymphs to work well.
