South Fork 9-8-15

As a result of flow out of Palisades Dam being raised to just over 9000 cfs, mutant golden stonefly hatch and resulting action to them by trout has slowed a bit. The best of this activity can be found now on the lower river.  Activity from fish feeding in riffles has slowed a bit, but fishing these can be productive. Try parachute or traditional Adams, purple haze, renegade, or cinnamon ants, all in size 16. Fish still respond to drifting hopper patterns, evening caddis emergences, and streamers fished around pods of baitfish.  Under low light conditions presenting streamers can result in larger trout encounters.

Small Streams 9-8-15

With most summer vacations over such streams as Teton River in Teton Basin and lower Fall River  will see fewer recreational boaters. This means mid day fishing will have fewer interruptions. The Teton River in the Basin is fishing very well with terrestrial insect and mahogany dun life cycle patterns producing during afternoon hours. Now that days are shortening and cooling most of the best dry fly fishing on small streams, excepting during remaining trico activity, will take place during afternoon hours.  More time is now needed for the atmosphere and therefore waters to warm up to point of best insect activity.

The Forest Service is closing the Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road in late September through October in order for heavy equipment to perform some upgrades.  More details on the closure can be obtained from the Caribou-Targhee National Forest web site. We place this announcement here because the road provides access for fishing waters in the south side of Fall River Basin within and outside the Park. Access to Grassy Lake Reservoir and the Beula Lake trail head will be available from the east end of the road at Flagg Ranch Resort. Speaking of Beula Lake, now that the nearby scout camp is closed for the season, your chance for solitude while fishing there is a lot better.

Small Streams 9-5-15

Teton River in the basin is a good place to try with fish taking terrestrial insect patterns, and lately mahogany duns.  Daytime recreationists will soon diminish to the point of not interfering with mid day fishing.

Kokanee are in Big Elk Creek big time, but they do not interfere with fishing for the cutts as much as folks trying to fish for them by legal and illegal means.

Warm River remains good fishing for folks presenting terrestrial insect, traditional attractor, and caddisfly life cycle patterns. Best location is just below Warm River Spring. After this weekend Warm River Campground will empty out, and the lower river will be less crowded for fishing.

The cooling weather is just what is needed for fishing to pick up on the Blackfoot River in the Wildlife Management Area. The low, warm water has slowed fishing there most of the summer, but now look for fish to respond well to AM tricos and day time terrestrial insect patterns.

South Fork 9-5-15

Some mutant golden stones are emerging but numbers are diminishing. Still they make for some good early in the day dry fly fishing.  The river has been stable with respect to flow and water temperature for several days, and we have had enough cloudy weather to begin the BWO and mahogany dun emergences. So day time now features fish responding to these events (especially during cloudy weather) along the river as well to terrestrial insect patterns during day time and to caddis emergences during evenings. Do not forget to try streamer patterns that time of day!

Henry’s Fork 9-5-15

For Last Chance-Harriman its tricos in the morning, caddis and terrestrials during day time and that big hair mouse at twilight. This cool snap is just what is needed to improve fishing in the river below Ashton Dam.  In the river above Ashton Reservoir its tricos in the AM, terrestrials (trailed by an ant pattern) during daytime, and streamers in the evening.  Larger fish in the Flat Ranch preserve part of the river, aka Henry’s Lake Outlet, will move downstream to The Tubs area above Mack’s Inn. This translates to good streamer fishing in that part of the river.

Henry’s Lake 9-1-15

A good hard cold snap would be just what is needed for good fishing action to begin on Henry’s Lake. For every report of success we have seen there are numbers of ones without successful fishing. If you are considering trying the lake, head for creek mouths (Targhee, Duck, Howard) or springs with intermediate lines and standard Henry’s Lake patterns.. But expect company, especially if you get into fish.

Small Streams 9-1-15

All the South Fork-Palisades Reservoir tribs will be good fishing this coming week end, but they likely will be crowded. That’s particularly true of Big Elk Creek where run-up kokanee attract legal and not so legal fishing. Each of these, excepting Bear Creek, have nearby popular campgrounds. Nevertheless fish in all of these will respond well to terrestrial insect, flav, caddis and traditional attractor patterns.  There will be numbers of day time recreationists on the Teton River in the basin, so fish it early and late in the day. Lower Warm River will be crowded and likely the same for the upper river in the Pole Bridge Campground area. There will likely be fewer enthusiasts on the river just below Warm River Spring because no campground is adjacent. And so it goes: expect lots of fly-fishers and other anglers if a campground is nearby. Some candidates places less likely to be crowded include the upper Blackfoot River, lower Fall River, lower Teton River, Bitch Creek, and Salt River tributaries. Henry’s Fork 9-1-15

There was a bear incident in Island Park recently, so it seems appropriate to mention not only bear spray but making noise to warn any bear that you are on the area and gives them a chance to get out of your way. It seems a lot less stressful if you let “brother (or sister) bruin” know you are in the area and it is time to leave, than is having to use that bear spray. Look at our current Yellowstone Park fishing report for some ideas on the subject of making noise to warn bears of your presence.

Flow out of Island Park Dam is considerably less than normal, so getting around to pitch those two nymph rigs or streamers in the evening is easier. Terrestrial patterns are the day time “name of the game” in the river below. Some tricos can make early AM fishing interesting. Are you more interested in fishing the lower river?  The Warm River to Ashton part is the place to try. Terrestrial patterns (ant trailing a hopper) work well, and caddis and streamers in the evening will bring action.  A good cold snap will improve action on the river below Ashton dam.
